Sheffield United urged to follow Bayer Leverkusen example as 70% Ruben Selles verdict emerges

Sheffield United are in disarray right now, and the Blades fanbase has called for severe and swift action to be taken to rectify the damage done during Ruben Selles’ tenure.

Despite initial dismay at Chris Wilder’s departure in the summer, there was at least some semblance of optimism and intrigue around what Ruben Selles could bring to Sheffield United.

However, after four defeats in four in the league and the worst start to a season in 30 years for the Blades, patience is running thin.

Selles himself admits he has no control over the situation, and fans are not sugarcoating their anger and frustration with the club already.

Sheffield United fans think Ruben Selles has lost the dressing room

It’s safe to say things have turned pretty toxic at Sheffield United already. Still, at least the supporters are united in one way, even if it is a desire to see Selles sacked.

Over on the Sheffield United Reddit community, fans ran a poll to discuss Selles’ fate, and from 135 votes a massive 91 voters stated the club should get rid of Selles now.

The 70% majority was firmly behind the idea of “doing a Leverkusen and getting rid early” despite Selles only being in the job for just over two months.

One fan commented: “I did support him and wanted to give him a chance but he has lost the players (and no clue what his system is) so I’m afraid might as well pull the trigger now.”

Another said: “I’d absolutely be happy to see him go now because we look clueless but it’s clearly not going to happen… There’s no excuse for us being where we are right now especially after last year. I’d say he’s got two games left.”

A third added: “I’m happy to give managers time when you can see an identity or style being developed but after five games I genuinely can’t see one and that’s a worry. They should have sacked him after Middlesbrough and given a new manager the international break to get to grips with the squad and hit the ground running.”

Elsewhere, one Blades fan looked at Selles’ time at Hull City as a clear indication of what’s to come, writing: “Wanted to give him a fair chance but sounds like he’s just falling into the same traps as when he was at Hull – not making changes when it’s obvious to everyone else.”

However, not everyone is against Selles right now. One supporter has had time to rethink, and said: “Would’ve said yes after the [Middlesbrough] game but now I’ve calmed down I think he deserves a bit more time. He’s managed to convince some quality players to get on board and fans of other teams saying it’s only a matter of time before we click; hope they are right.”

Should Sheffield United stick or twist with Ruben Selles?

Just how long the Sheffield United board keep faith with Selles remains to be seen. You would think, given the investment in new players over the summer, they’d be keen to avoid making a decision too soon and will be desperate for things to work out.

However, it’s hard to look at the upcoming Championship game against Ipswich as anything less than a crucial game for Selles if he is to turn things around. After his players have had a full international break to rest, recover, and get to grips with the system more, there has to be some improvement.

The worrying thing is, United haven’t even scored in the last three games and are barely creating any chances. Sheffield United have real attacking problems, and even with 14 new arrivals in the summer, that area was not properly addressed.
