Ruben Selles has already overseen a ‘heartbreaking’ decline at Sheffield United as fans turn ‘toxic’

Things are going from bad to worse for Sheffield United this season, and fans are absolutely losing their minds and their patience now.

After missing out on promotion last season in the dying moments of the Championship play-off final, Sheffield United have undergone a drastic rebuild this summer, but it’s not been a positive one.

We’ve seen the legendary Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder depart, Ruben Selles come in, and key players like Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic leave the club.

Now, with four defeats from four league games (and a Carabao Cup exit to boot), United are the only team in the EFL yet to register a single point this season.

Sheffield United fans are in disarray after latest defeat

This weekend, we saw the Blades fall to a 1-0 defeat away at league leaders Middlesbrough. Not only that, but it was yet another frustrating and flat display from Selles’ team, and fans were not afraid to show their displeasure at the final whistle.

Posting a video from the Riverside after the game of fans booing the Sheffield United players and Selles, one fan wrote: “This is heartbreaking to watch. A club that was so together last season is now divided. It couldn’t be any more toxic than what it is now. What has happened to us?”

Among the comments, some United fans tried to explain how this could have happened. One replied: “Everyone knows what’s happened. [They] took the spine out that turned us around after the worst season we’ve ever had in the Premier League. We over achieved last year but that’s what Wilder does, he gets magic out of half decent players.”

Another added: “COH Sports has happened. Meddling with things they didn’t understand, coming in with half-baked ideas involving poker players setting transfer policy. Should have left us as it was and gone again.”

The call for Selles to go is getting louder and louder. “Hard watch that. Do feel sorry for him on a human level. On a football club keeping its Championship status level, though, we have to part ways,” one supporter said.

Another added: “He needs to go but this is not on. We’re better than this Blades.”

However, one fan suggested this is a problem that’s occurred for a while now, writing: “Definitely wasn’t as ‘together’ last season as people like to make out. We had people bickering cause fans were walking out after 75 minutes.”

Who could replace Ruben Selles at Sheffield United?

Selles has admitted he cannot control his future at Sheffield United, and by the sound of things around the fanbase, that future may not be a very long one at this rate. But, who could actually come in and replace the Spaniard at this stage of the season?

The obvious answer is Chris Wilder, but whether the man himself would actually return to the club so soon is questionable. Plus, would the club’s hierarchy really want to go back grovelling to the man they parted ways with just a couple of months ago?

Some Blades fans want Danny Rohl to replace Selles. The former Sheffield Wednesday man is still without a club, and there was plenty of speculation suggesting he would go to Bramall Lane this summer. Surely he wouldn’t, would he?

Other suggestions include Sean Dyche and Steve Cooper, who are both free agents and fit the bill of the no-nonsense, back-to-basics approach Sheffield United might need right now.
