Sheffield United fans are ‘gutted’ as Anel Ahmedhodzic makes £7m switch to Feyenoord

It’s been a summer of protection for Sheffield United as they went all out to keep hold of their key players at Bramall Lane.

Vini Souza has joined Wolfsburg for £13m, but Gustavo Hamer very much remains a Blade after he helped take the club to the Championship play-off final last time out.

Ruben Selles has his Souza replacement in the form of Djibril Soumare, however, there will be concerns about the South Yorkshire outfit’s defensive capabilities with Anel Ahmedhodzic now departing Bramall Lane.

The centre-back has joined Dutch giants Feyenoord for £7m, as per The Star, despite previous reports from the BBC stating that an offer worth £15.6m had been tabled.

Sheffield United fans are devastated about losing Anel Ahmedhodzic

The Blades have not quite made the moves they have needed to so far in the summer transfer window, and with Ahmedhodzic now gone, they must find a replacement.

Supporters are a little bit concerned about their depth at centre-back now, and they have taken to social media to react to the news of his exit.

Another Sheffield United fan wrote: “Let’s hope there’s a decent replacement lined up otherwise that defence is looking horrific for the start of the season. Good luck to @Anelswe and thanks for the memories.”

While a third put: “Disappointing to start the season with no good centre-halves, good luck Anel. That goal vs West Brom that got us promoted in 2023 will always be remembered.”

“With a year left, we probably had limited options on Anel. No idea whether we offered a new contract, but we should have been talking to him if we wanted him to stay. Would he have signed? Who knows. As he’s gone it suggests, he may well have gone in 12 months for free anyway,” a fifth conceded.

A sixth Sheffield United fan said: “Another big loss with just a few days until we start. I get that we loan players but can we actually buy a proper player? We are very light in the defenders area…let’s hope we get someone soon.”

Anel Ahmedhodzic is going to be a huge loss

While he did have just the one year left on his contract, Ahmedhodzic was going to be a vital player for the Blades’ promotion push.

OPTA have predicted Sheffield United to win the Championship, but losing players such as the defender will make their task so much more difficult and questions will be asked about their depth.

They face Bristol City on Saturday evening, with the game a repeat of the Blades’ 6-0 aggregate win over the Robins in the play-off semi-final. However, they will go into this without Ahmedhodzic.

Selles has work to do to get this team up to the same levels as their rivals, otherwise their promotion dreams may become more distant.
