Sheffield United fans have one major complaint about Djibril Soumare deal, it ‘doesn’t feel right’

After the disappointment of their play-off failure last season, Sheffield United need to come back strong in 2025/26 and they’ll be hoping the signing of Djibril Soumare helps them achieve that goal.

Ruben Selles is now in charge of Sheffield United and has tried his best to keep the core of the Blades squad intact from the Chris Wilder era.

He did lose influential midfielder Vini Souza, though, and it’s thought Soumare will be the replacement for that midfield role now.

Whether the young Senegalese midfielder can step up to the plate remains to be seen, but it seems fans are already unhappy with the signing before he’s even kicked a ball.

Djibril Soumare joins Sheffield United on loan and fans aren’t impressed

As the new Sheffield United signing was announced on Twitter/X, Blades supporters noticed that the arrival was a loan deal (with an obligation to buy) rather than a straight transfer, prompting some to lament the fact the United hierarchy are not spending money in the market this summer.

One said: “The board doesn’t wanna cough up money cause another failure of a season is incoming.”

A second added: “Another loan. About £18million in sales so far (more to come I reckon) and the new owners aren’t willing to spend anything. Doesn’t feel right to me.”

Another simply expressed their shock with a tweet reading, “Record scratch, freeze frame…. loan????”

However, others were more enthused. One fan tweeted: “Why are people moaning about a loan for an untested foreign league player? If he’s quality we sign him for a potential bargain fee that we have pre-agreed. If he’s awful we don’t… Win, win in my eyes for an unproven Championship player.”

Another compared Soumare to a former Blades star, adding: “If he’s half as good as Iliman Ndiaye he will do for me.”

Elsewhere, one greedy Sheffield United fan wasn’t happy with just the one signing, writing: “Announce McBurnie.” They’ll not be pleased when they hear that Hull City are ready to sign Oli McBurnie within the next 24 hours.

Djibril Soumare’s first words as a Sheffield United player

It’s probably best to reserve judgement on Soumare and the deal to bring him to Bramall Lane until we see him in action for the Blades.

However, his first words as a United player will be encouraging for any fans hoping he can live up to the expectations set by former star Ndiaye.

He said: “I am delighted to be here; it is a real honour to sign for Sheffield United and I’m really excited to come to England and test myself in English football.

“I’ve had some good experiences playing in Portugal, but this was a great opportunity for me and it was something which appealed immediately when I first heard about United’s interest.

“I was born in Senegal and Sheffield United is a club which is well known back home because of the impact of Iliman Ndiaye. He’s set the standard here, and it is fantastic for me to follow in his footsteps.”

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Soumare when the Championship fixtures kick off this weekend. Opta expect Sheffield United to win the title, and Soumare’s performances will play a key role in that ambition.
