Sheffield United fans pinpoint ‘one positive’ from Millwall loss after securing unwanted feat

Sheffield United have had a worrying start to their Championship season, but one player’s performance in their defeat to Millwall offered them some much-needed hope.

The Blades lost 1-0 to the south Londoners at home on Saturday, with Luke Cundle’s first half goal enough to take all three points. Millwall fans got plenty of joy out of goading Lions defender and United’s transfer target Japhet Tanganga, who was absent from the game.

It marked the fourth loss in all four games in all competitions so far this campaign for Ruben Selles – the worst possible start he could’ve envisioned when he took the job in June.

However, amongst the chaos and fan disgruntlement, Blades fans have piled praise on one player who they were impressed with on Saturday afternoon as they stayed at the foot of the Championship table.

Ben Godfrey’s debut a silver lining amid Sheffield United’s nightmare

Ex-Norwich and Everton defender Ben Godfrey signed for Sheffield United on loan from Atalanta on Friday and was available for selection against Millwall.

He went straight into the starting line-up after a tough opening few weeks for the Blades back-line.

The 27-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Ipswich, received plenty of praise from the home faithful both in the ground and online after the match.

One fan wrote: “Only positive from today is I really like the look of Ben Godfrey.”

A few Blades said he looked better when moved into centre-half from right back, too.

“Play him centre half with Tanganga,” another fan suggested.

“Really liked Ben Godfrey, I think at this level would be a rolls Royce at RB or CB,” a third wrote.

The new loanee will at least give United fans hope recruitment will be moving in the right direction before the window shuts, with the news of Gustavo Hamer staying at the club already a huge boost.

Sheffield United endure club’s worst ever start to Championship season

After marking their third loss of the Championship season in as many games this weekend, the Blades have had their worst ever start in the competition after three matches.

In October 2023, United famously took the crown for worst start in Premier League history under Paul Heckingbottom.

They managed one point in 10 games and a -22 goal difference. Only two teams had picked up one point or fewer in their first 10 Premier League games – Sheffield United in 2023/24 and Sheffield United in 2020/21.

While this season’s start is far from being the worst from any team in history since the Championship rebrand (Derby take that crown), United have beaten their own previous poor start.

This came in the 2021/22 season when they picked up one draw and two losses after three matches, managing a goal difference of -5.

The 2-1 loss to Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup earlier this month won’t have helped Blades fans’ frustrations, either. They will hope for improvements when they face Middlesbrough next Saturday.
