Sheffield United fans tip ‘ridiculous’ star for England call-up – rival supporters disagree

Sheffield United fans think one of their players deserves to be called up by Thomas Tuchel for England.

The final international break of the season is now upon us and Sheffield United went into it in a very strong position.

Despite their two-point deduction they, along with Leeds United and Burnley, are firmly in the race to secure automatic promotion.

Sheffield United beat Sheffield Wednesday this past weekend, seeing them close the gap on first-place Leeds United.

While Blades fans are firmly focused on securing promotion back to the Premier League right now, attention has turned away from the club football and to the international break.

Thomas Tuchel announced his England squad last week and it included just one player from the second tier.

This came despite suggestions Tuchel could call up Championship players for the Three Lions.

Sheffield United fans Michael Cooper for England call-up

Now, an interesting debate has broken out on social media surrounding Sheffield United goalkeeper, Michael Cooper.

Sheffield United supporters are of the opinion that their shot-stopper deserves to be called up for his country in the near future.

One fan wrote: “If we don’t go up he’s gone. Someone takes a punt on him. Right age and absolute quality. Decent with his feet as well which helps these days.”

A second claimed: “Way better than Ramsdale,” while another wrote: “I agree! Hands down the best in the league, saved Utd several times this season….only cost £2m too”

A fourth Sheffield United simply replied: “He’s absolute quality.”

However, numerous rival fans also took to the comment section of the post to suggest there are better options.

One Burnley supporter wrote: “Not even on Trafford’s level.”

Another replied: “Best keeper in the Championship has already been selected mate.”

While a third claimed: “Look at Trafford’s stats then tell me Cooper’s the best in the Championship.”

Michael Cooper vs Burnley’s James Trafford Championship stats

When taking a look at James Trafford and Cooper’s stats in the league this term, they do suggest the Burnley ace has been in better form.

However, there is still an argument that Cooper could perhaps be given a chance ahead of Aaron Ramsdale.

The Southampton player has shipped a staggering 50 goals and kept just two clean sheets in 21 Premier League games this season, so it’s easy to see why some Sheffield United fans want Cooper in ahead of their former player.

But as the Blades look likely to win promotion to the top-flight for 2025/26, the 25-year-old may have a better chance of getting into the side then.
