Sheffield United take ‘seven-figure’ PSR hit after replacing Ruben Selles with Chris Wilder

EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal how costly Sheffield United’s managerial summer merry-go-round has been.

Sheffield United have reappointed Chris Wilder as manager, just three months after sacking the much-loved Blades boss following their Championship play-off final defeat to Sunderland.

Sheffield United sacked Ruben Selles, Wilder’s replacement, after he oversaw six defeats from his first six games in charge of a short-lived stint.

Following the shock move, EFL Analysis exclusively revealed that Sheffield United are set for a significant financial boost as a result of Wilder’s appointment, given that the Blades no longer have to pay the monthly installments for his substantial pay-off.

However, not all is positive on the financial front at Sheffield United following Wilder’s return to Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United suffer PSR hit after Chris Wilder reappointment

The Sheffield United board were praised for reappointing Wilder, and for learning the error of their ill-fated ways, but that admission of error has come at a heavy cost for COH Sports in the Bramall Lane boardroom.

EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal, thanks to our Football Finance expert Adam Williams, that Sheffield United have taken a seven-figure financial hit by sacking Selles and rehiring Wilder.

Williams explained: “It was reported when Sheffield United prised Ruben Selles from Hull City that they paid a six-figure compensation fee. His deal there was originally due to expire in the summer of 2026.

“That tells us a little bit about the kind of wages he will have been on there and, by extension, how much he was probably being paid at Sheffield United. Basically, it tells us he earns less than £1m per year, which would equate to around £19,000.

“At Sheffield United, however, you would anticipate that he would have been on a healthier package. And he had the best part of three years remaining on that contract.

“Depending on the terms of his contract, it’s almost certainly going to be seven figures this time around.

“Usually, it’s assumed that the compensation a club pays out is equivalent to the remaining value of the contract, i.e., the club buys Selles out of the wages he was set to earn until 2028. However, it’s often not as straightforward as that.

“For one, sometimes the manager receives the total value of the deal as a lump sum, while at other times they will simply continue to receive their wages as they ordinarily would but without performing their duties.

“Either way, however, the cost of dismissing him will be capitalised immediately – which means, whatever it cost, it will count towards their profit or loss this season. That is the figure which PSR is calculated based on.

“On top of that, you have Wilder’s wages to pay now too. Although, the advantage of signing an unattached manager is that you don’t have to pay a compensation fee. He will have a signing-on fee, though.

“In Selles’ case, it’s possible that there will have been a stipulation which limited the amount of compensation he was entitled to if he was dismissed within a certain timeframe.

“I’m speculating there, but these kinds of break clauses aren’t uncommon at all. There are also sometimes stipulations about a reduced package if a manager has failed to achieve certain objectives. A negotiated settlement is a possibility, too.”

Chris Wilder must get off to a winning start on Sheffield United return

Sheffield United face Charlton Athletic this weekend on Wilder’s homecoming to Bramall Lane, as the Blades search for their first points of the Championship season.

Charlton can spoil Wilder’s Sheffield United reunion for their former player, but the inevitably raucous atmosphere could be too much for the Addicks to handle.

In EFL Analysis’ Championship score predictions for gameweek 6, we have backed the Blades to beat Charlton 3-1 with Wilder back at the Sheffield United helm.

Nathan Jones would have something to say about that, but given the circumstances surrounding the clash, it feels inevitable that Wilder will get off to a winning start in his third spell as Blades boss.
