Sheffield Wednesday fans are all dreaming about 2023 Wembley trip, it was ‘some day’

Sheffield Wednesday have spent the last two seasons back in the Championship after a two-year stay in League One, and supporters will never forget how they returned to the second tier.

It’s two years to the day since Josh Windass found the back of the net in the 123rd minute against Barnsley with the score locked at 0-0, with his header sending nearly 40,000 Owls fans into a state of pure ecstasy.

Darren Moore, who was in charge of the South Yorkshire outfit at the time, called the victory ‘tremendous’ but he left later that summer with Xisco Munoz taking charge at Hillsborough – a decision that did not pay off in any shape or form.

However, the former Derby County and West Brom defender will always rightfully be remembered for that League One play-off campaign, and supporters have reflected on that famous day at Wembley, less than a week after Sheffield United’s latest play-off defeat.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters reflect on that magical day at Wembley

With the uncertainty surrounding Danny Rohl’s future, Owls fans need something to celebrate at the moment, and the anniversary of one of their greatest moments in the 21st century has come at the right time.

Windass, who has praised Rohl in recent weeks, will forever be the recipient of an incredible amount of gratitude after scoring the goal to return Sheffield Wednesday to the Championship and fans have been looking back at their incredible day.

One fan wrote: “One of the best days of my life. So thankful I was there.”

While another put: “What a day it was.”

A fourth put: “What a day, Ihad to watch it when I got home. Beers from 8am were going down far too well.”

Meanwhile a fifth Sheffield Wednesday supporter wrote: “I’d done it all before but seeing my daughter’s face that day eclipsed it all.”

And for one Sunderland supporter, it was a chance to bask in the glory of Saturday as they sent a message to Sheffield United fans: “Josh Windass header in extra-time. At least one team in Sheffield can win at Wembley and sell all their tickets.”

That day of glory will feel a long time ago now for Owls fans

Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership of the Owls is perhaps as close as it has ever been to coming to an end, but with Rohl still not certain to be around for next season, the transfer window will open with huge question marks surrounding S6.

While last season on the pitch was much better for Sheffield Wednesday, the issues off the pitch have never seemed to leave them and they could drag into a large chunk of the summer if those at the top are not careful.

With Windass sticking around, there are some reasons to be positive, but next season could be tough for the Owls and that incredible day at Wembley will only start to feel like more of a distant memory.
