Werder Bremen have just pulled out of Danny Rohl pursuit as Sheffield Wednesday handed major problem

Sheffield Wednesday want to resolve Danny Rohl’s future sooner rather than later, but one clause in his contract is proving a problem.

Rohl made himself a hero at Hillsborough after miraculously saving them from relegation in 2023/24 when they were completely written off.

Sheffield Wednesday then built on that foundation in 2024/25 with a 12th-place finish, but unfortunately, a positive Championship campaign is quickly unravelling into a nightmare summer.

Ahead of pre-season, Rohl has admitted he wants to leave Wednesday, and has already made comments that have burnt bridges with the fans.

We revealed that Germany is the most likely destination for Rohl, though one club have pulled out of the race for his signature.

Werder Bremen were put off by Danny Rohl’s £5 million release clause

On Tuesday, it emerged that Werder Bremen shortlisted Rohl as a candidate for their vacant managerial position after sacking Ole Werner.

The 36-year-old was joined by Clemens Fritz, Horst Steffen and Lukas Kwasniok as a list of options being eyed by Werder, and now they’re close to appointing one of them.

According to BILD, Elversberg coach Steffen has agreed a three-year contract with the Bundesliga side after triggering his €300,000 (£250,000) release clause.

The report claimed that: “Steffen is affordable for Werder, while the other coaching options would have required transfer fees in the millions.”

That is correct as Rohl’s deal contains a £5 million release clause, which has been the sticking point for several other interested parties.

While it was seen as clever to include a buyout clause in his contract, they’re currently shooting themselves in the foot as no one is willing to pay it.

Sheffield Wednesday’s stance on sacking Rohl

Although several Championship clubs are looking for a new manager, Wednesday are being denied that chance as Rohl can only leave if a team agrees on a deal with him.

Wednesday are refusing to sack Rohl to accelerate the process, and unfortunately, this could leave them lagging behind other clubs who are getting their business done.

The Owls can only plan properly for the summer if they know who is in charge. As the German sees his future elsewhere, and supporters are now unhappy with him, the only option for him is to leave.

Of course, there is plenty of time before pre-season for his future to be resolved, but the new manager also needs time to bring in his personnel.

If Rohl has no intentions of staying at Hillsborough, perhaps he should resign while waiting for the next opportunity instead of leaving Wednesday in the dark.
