Sheffield Wednesday fans’ Dejphon Chansiri protests have had unfortunate impact at EFL club

Sheffield Wednesday have not had much to cheer on the pitch so far this season, but two victories in the Carabao Cup in August did lift the mood of supporters.

The Owls defeated Bolton Wanderers in the first round of the competition, taking victory on penalties after a frantic 3-3 draw in normal time.

Sheffield Wednesday then beat Leeds United on penalties in round two, despite the Whites playing Premier League football this season, with Ethan Horvath taking plenty of plaudits at Hillsborough.

Nevertheless, this excitement was ended by Grimsby Town earlier in September as the League Two side ran out 1-0 winners in South Yorkshire. The home fans tried their best to boycott the game, but that hindered the Mariners.

There was a clear stance made by a number of Owls supporters against Grimsby as Hillsborough looked empty for the most part. However, following exclusive information from finance expert Adam Williams, this perhaps had more of an impact on the League Two side.

He told EFL Analysis: “Because they are entitled to 45 per cent of the gate receipts, it will have been frustrating for Grimsby Town that Sheffield Wednesday fans boycotted the third round tie – although I’m sure they will understand their reasons at the same time.

“Grimsby will also be somewhat frustrated by the fact that they have been drawn at home to a Premier League side in the next round, rather than away.

“If they had got, say, Liverpool or Tottenham away in the next round then they could have been looking at a seven-figure windfall. You also get your travel and accommodation costs and reimbursed, so it would be all profit as far as Grimsby are concerned.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s Carabao Cup attendances

In the Championship this season, the Owls have an average attendance of 20,475. This is over 6,000 fewer than the 2024/25 as the team struggles towards the bottom of the league table.

However, the boycott has been clear to see in the Carabao Cup, with just 7,801 making their way to Hillsborough to watch the Yorkshire derby against Leeds. Around 3700 of those were away supporters.

Meanwhile, Grimsby sold an extra 2000 tickets against Sheffield Wednesday, taking their travelling allocation to around the 6000 mark. Overall, there were 9,424 spectators in S6 to watch the Mariners progress to the fourth round.

Sheffield Wednesday could lose four home games in a row to start the season for the first time since 1999 on Saturday as they welcome QPR to Hillsborough, and it’ll be interesting to see whether more supporters stay away this weekend.
