Barry Bannan’s comments about Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership of Sheffield Wednesday have led to huge praise from the chairman of the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust.

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has created a dire situation at the club.

The alarming state of the club, whether it be the makeshift first-team that was chipped away at in the summer, or the uncertainties regarding players’ and staff’s pay, Sheffield Wednesday coaches and players, former and present, have felt the need to speak up about the situation.

Former Sheffield Wednesday coach Chris Powell criticised Chansiri for his running of the club, having never met the Thai businessman during his tenure at the club.

That was followed up by Barry Bannan asking questions of Chansiri and his ownership of Sheffield Wednesday, which has received mass praise from the Supporters’ Trust.

Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust call for Barry Bannan statue after Dejphon Chansiri comments

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed recently that Chansiri is at a £40m Sheffield Wednesday crossroads with their September 30 debt deadline approaching.

The issues strangling Sheffield Wednesday have been summed up by Barry Bannan, who said: “We got paid last month perfectly fine. Everybody got paid. But it’s getting to the point now at the club where you’re looking to your payday and think, I might not get paid here.

“So, you’re having to, and the thing is, we don’t even get told weeks in advance. It’ll be the night before payday.”

Bannan continued: “So I was saying this to the chairman as well about trying to find out in advance so you can give people the heads up so they can move money around and help because, there’s mortgages and you know it’s like if you miss a payment in your mortgage they’re straight on you and it affects people’s credit for the rest of their life.”

After speaking out about the payment concerns for Sheffield Wednesday players and staff, while showing that he has made attempts to communicate with Chansiri, he has been given huge praise by the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust.

The Trust’s chairman, Ian Bennett, speaking to Football Heaven, gave his thoughts on Bannan and how his actions at the club recently should eventually be rewarded by being immortalised with a statue in S6.

“What a legend Barry Bannan is,” said Bennett. “That’s a fantastic statement and the way he has come out, there is obviously something happening again.

“What an unbelievable captain and leader he is. I for one, from the trust, are gonna push for a statue or memorial towards him at Hillsborough, I think he deserves it. He is a legend at the football club.”

Owls fans are in agreement that Barry Bannan deserves a statue

The summer ahead of the 2025/26 season was a particularly bleak period for the football club. Still, supporters were given a glimmer of hope when Barry Bannan signed a contract at Sheffield Wednesday.

After the news broke, Sheffield Wednesday fans called for a Bannan statue, which reflects on how valued he is by the supporters.

Several leaders in the Sheffield Wednesday dressing room understandably left this summer, but Bannan has held firm to help keep his club above the surface.

Once Sheffield Wednesday eventually emerge after the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri, the part that Bannan has played will not have gone unnoticed.
