Sheffield Wednesday fans slap ‘£10m valuation’ on underrated star who can now ‘change games’

Sheffield Wednesday fans may have been put through hell this summer, but they’re impressed by what they’ve seen from their players on the pitch this season.

With intense financial issues leading to multiple players leaving the club, Sheffield Wednesday and Henrik Pedersen are having to struggle through with a makeshift, threadbare squad at the moment.

Despite this, they’ve had Leicester City on the ropes, grabbed a point from the clutches of defeat against Wrexham, and a young Owls team has also progressed in the Carabao Cup.

From the brink of disaster, we are now seeing some Sheffield Wednesday players grabbing their newfound opportunities with both hands, and one previously underused star has stepped up more than most.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters love Svante Ingelsson

Swedish midfielder Svante Ingelsson was used sparingly by Danny Rohl last season, showing glimpses of promise but failing to get a consistent run in the team.

Since the departure of Josh Windass to Wrexham, Wednesday have needed a new playmaker to pull the strings, and Ingelsson has duly taken on that role under Pedersen.

Discussing the success of Ingelsson’s integration into the starting XI on Twitter/X, the Wednesday ‘Til I Die podcast asked fans for their verdicts on the player, and the replies were filled with unanimous praise.

One supporter wrote: “I don’t know if he’s a standout because of the lack of other quality, or if he’s noticeably stepping up this season. Either way it’s been great watching him try and change games, you can’t fault his effort.”

Another said: “He’s on a one man crusade on the opposition at times. What an engine and attitude. Praying we keep him fit the way he gets the team up the pitch on his own at times is great.”

A third added, “Exactly the sort of player we need for this season, he’s been class so far,” while a fourth said, “Without him we would be in serious trouble. Well, more than we already are. His energy helps run the team alongside Bannan.”

Elsewhere, plenty of fans were under no illusions as to why it’s taken so long for Ingelsson to show what he can do in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt, with Rohl to blame.

“You could see his potential last season. He has the experience of the league now and appears to be taking on the responsibility given the lack of depth. He is quality and works very hard,” one said.

Another added: “I personally think Danny Rohl held up his progress last season. In and out of the team all the time.” Others agreed, replying, “This season and last, when Rohl picked him. He’s quick, direct, runs with the ball. Hungry.”

Finally, just in case Dejphon Chansiri was considering selling his new star player, one Sheffield Wednesday insisted Ingelsson should come with a “£10m valuation now.”

A look at Svante Ingelsson’s statistics for Sheffield Wednesday this season

Last season, Ingelsson made 38 appearances totaling 1,932 minutes. That’s an average of just over 50 minutes per game for the Swedish midfielder. He bagged five assists and one goal in that time.

So far this term, he’s played the full 90 minutes in all three of Sheffield Wednesday’s league games, and while he’s not registered any goal contributions, his impact is clear to see.

Ingelsson is making an average of 2.33 progressive carries per 90, as well as 4.00 progressive passes per 90. His pass success rate is up from 63.3% last year to 66.1% this season, too.

Obviously, the more advanced role is helping his influence higher up the pitch, as well. Ingelsson clocked 2.61 shot-creating actions per 90 last season, but that’s now up to a whopping 5.33 this term.

Wednesday are clearly trying to get him on the ball more, with his touches per 90 average increasing from 41.9 in 2024/25 to 47.7 touches in 2025/26.

It’s early days, of course, but if Ingelsson can keep up these kinds of numbers, his influence will only grow and grow as the season goes on and he could well become the key man under Pedersen.
