Sheffield Wednesday are set to begin their 2025/26 Championship campaign with a trip to Leicester City.

New Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen is set to have a huge task on his hands; some would say that relegation this season is a near certainty.

Any hopes and optimism amongst Owls fans have been shattered across what has been a disastrous summer for Sheffield Wednesday, overseen by Dejphon Chansiri.

While there has been momentary hope for the club after Barry Bannan signed a new deal at the club, expectations for the season are at an all-time low.

However, Pedersen has now attempted to give long-suffering fans a bit of hope going into the new campaign after seeing something within his squad.

Pedersen praises the attitude of the players in this tough period

New Sheffield Wednesday manager Pedersen has done his first in-depth interview with the club following his appointment to the role.

He believes this ability to separate themselves from what is happening behind the scenes at the Owls and knowing what they have to do on the pitch is commendable, and fans should be encouraged by this ahead of the new season.

He said: “I am really proud of our players because in a situation like this, and it is difficult, you can always find a reason why to give up.

“But you can always find one reason to keep on doing things with high quality and intensity why you keep pushing your teammates in a positive way.

“The boys have been a fantastic example for a high-performance culture in a difficult period.

“This energy in the group and how they have supported each other in these phases.

“For this I have big respect.”

No expectations on Sheffield Wednesday this season

Following the events that have unfolded this summer, Wednesday will be the favourites to be relegated to League One.

The club have lost several star players and their manager ahead of the season, with the Owls turning to their youth to provide cover this season.

While it is not comparable in terms of finances and the fears around the club, there are similar views being held upon Wednesday as there were upon Hull City in the Premier League in 2016/17.

Hull City only had 13 fit senior players in pre-season, with Steve Bruce leaving less than a month before the start of the campaign.

The Tigers were given no chance for the season, but under Mike Phelan and then Marco Silva, albeit there were a few additions to the squad, the club finished just six points shy of remaining in the division.

This example should inspire the Sheffield Wednesday squad that they can impress despite the odds being against them, as they are talented players.
