Sheffield Wednesday have history on their side with 13-year record to protect vs Bristol City

It’s been a struggle for Sheffield Wednesday this season, but the next fixture against Bristol City presents a golden opportunity to bag their first win of the campaign.

Obviously, given the extenuating circumstances around Sheffield Wednesday this summer, the Owls have been written off as relegation fodder for 2025/26.

Financial difficulties and a heavily weakened squad have put Henrik Pedersen in a tough position, but there can be no denying that his players are giving their all on the pitch as they fight for survival.

Meanwhile, Gerhard Struber has had a strong start with Bristol City and they remain unbeaten in the Championship so far.

Sheffield Wednesday have not lost to Bristol City at home since 2012

The two sides go head-to-head this Saturday at Hillsborough in what would, on paper, appear to be an uneven contest with the Robins fancied to pick up all three points on the road.

However, looking at this fixture historically, it’s actually Sheffield Wednesday who hold the big advantage. In fact, the Owls are unbeaten in 13 years at Hillsborough against Bristol City, going eight games at home without suffering defeat to their upcoming opponents.

There have been three draws and five home wins in that period. You have to go all the way back to December 2012 for the last time Bristol City won at Hillsborough, with a 3-2 victory in the Championship.

Last season, the two teams shared the spoils in both fixtures, with a 2-2 draw at Hillsborough and a 0-0 stalemate at Ashton Gate.

Overall in the history of this tie, Sheffield Wednesday have a massive 31 wins compared to Bristol City’s 19, while there have been 18 draws.

Home games have been difficult for Sheffield Wednesday this season

In past seasons, Sheffield Wednesday have usually enjoyed a decent home record, largely thanks to the incredible following they get at Hillsborough. This season, that’s all changed.

Fewer and fewer fans are turning up to games in an attempt to boycott Dejphon Chansiri’s reign, and those who do attend are primarily focused on vocalising their disdain for the maligned chairman.

In many ways, the hostile atmosphere may be affecting Sheffield Wednesday players, who are yet to triumph or even score at home in the league this year. But, there’s no way the fans should even consider holding back in their attempts to apply pressure to Chansiri.

The latest protest for Sheffield Wednesday fans will see them gather after the final whistle in the South Stand to ‘shake’ the ground with their united chants. The fact this will take place after the game may well allow for a slightly more peaceful 90 minutes for the players, and could be key to them getting a positive result against Bristol City.
