Danny Rohl says critics got one thing ‘completely wrong’ about his time at Sheffield Wednesday

While Danny Rohl’s tenure as Sheffield Wednesday manager may have ended on a sour note, he has come out and refuted claims he stopped caring about the job.

The early days of Danny Rohl’s time with the Owls were full of optimism and passion as the German coach led the club to a miraculous survival in his first season.

In 2024/25, Sheffield Wednesday were plagued by inconsistency, but still managed to land a 12th place finish in the Championship.

However, amid financial chaos over the summer, Rohl managed to tarnish his reputation with the fans by actively seeking a new job. The players were unhappy with Rohl, and he had to go.

Danny Rohl was not happy when people questioned him

We know Rohl started to question his Sheffield Wednesday future when Dejphon Chansiri’s financial problems started to bleed into the everyday running of the team.

However, there are some critics who claimed Rohl had already lost interest in his job long before that. This is something the 36-year-old vehemently denies in an interview with The Times.

He said: “Just a small example. [In March] we played at Plymouth on Saturday and Norwich on Tuesday and I worked on Monday over the whole night. I didn’t sleep, to prepare for Norwich.

“If someone speaks about my attitude, that something changed, it’s completely wrong,” he says. “What changed in the second half of the season was not me but the mood at the club.”

Interestingly, those two games in question were matches that Sheffield Wednesday won back-to-back. The Owls only won two more games after that, though, with results and performances taking a significant dip.

Will we see Danny Rohl in the Championship again?

Over the summer, Rohl was linked with Southampton, Leicester City, and Middlesbrough most prominently. They all passed, with a theory that his massive release clause at Sheffield Wednesday was the big issue.

Given the way Boro and Leicester have started the season, and the huge investment Southampton have put into Will Still’s project, it’s highly unlikely those jobs will come back around any time soon.

Rohl was also, rather incredibly, suggested as an option for Sheffield United. After seeing Ruben Selles struggle, Blades fans have called for Rohl to come in already.

That would be sensational, to say the least, but not impossible. However, we have to say it’s more likely we will see Rohl return to his native Germany for a new job.
