Sheffield Wednesday are facing a potential summer exodus, with the Owls missing payments to players for another month under owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Financial turmoil has hit Sheffield Wednesday this summer after the 2024/25 Championship campaign concluded.

Sheffield Wednesday have a three-window transfer ban to contend with in this summer window and beyond, as well as the Owls suffering a double embargo by the EFL.

Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri has overseen the failure to pay some players and staff for the second month running, and as a result, Chansiri is facing strike action, with players allowed to terminate their contracts due to non-payments.

In news which rubs even more salt into the wounds of Sheffield Wednesday fans, one of the Owls’ best players has informed the club they want to leave this summer amid the wages failure fiasco.

Josh Windass wants to leave Sheffield Wednesday amid financial crisis

Despite the small instance of positive news yesterday at Hillsborough, emerging that Will Grainger has signed an Owls scholarship, the Sheffield Wednesday headlines have still been dominated by negative developments.

On Tuesday, it transpired that Owls legend Callum Patterson left Sheffield Wednesday as a free agent after his contract expired, to join the list of Championship free agents after five years at Hillsborough.

Now, in yet another blow for the Owls faithful, forward Josh Windass is now among the handful of Sheffield Wednesday players to tell the club hierarchy they want to leave due to persistent late wage payments, according to Give Me Sport.

Although Windass was not one of the six Sheffield Wednesday stars who can leave for free, as he still has one year left to run on his Owls deal, FIFA rules outline that players can tender a 15-day notice period to clubs after two late payments of wages.

Windass played down exit talk earlier in the season, but went on to conclude the campaign with 13 goals and five assists in 44 Championship outings to his name.

Now, the 31-year-old looks set to depart Hillsborough this summer, after more than five years at the club.

Josh Windass will leave Sheffield Wednesday as an Owls legend

Since the Englishman arrived from Wigan Athletic in 2020, Windass has scored 53 goals in 182 appearances for the Owls, with the most important strike of all coming in the League One play-off final against Barnsley.

Windass’ bullish header from penalty-spot distance in the dying embers of extra-time sent the travelling Sheffield Wednesday faithful delirious at Wembley, and sent the Owls back to the Championship as a result under Darren Moore.

With Leicester in talks over Danny Rohl, and the potential summer exodus of the Sheffield Wednesday squad, the future is frightening for one of English football’s most historic clubs.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire revealed how Sheffield Wednesday fans can instigate change against Chansiri, and that action may need to come sooner rather than later from all parties involved with the club on the brink of collapse.
