Sheffield Wednesday target snubs Hillsborough return in favour of European dream

Sheffield Wednesday missed out on several would-be transfer targets this summer as they were restricted by the EFL due to worries around their ability to finance any potential deals.

This means they missed out on several would-be transfer targets, while they also had to say farewell to some of their star players for little to no money.

One of these potential transfer targets turned down the chance of joining Sheffield Wednesday, partly due to the inability of the Owls to sign players due to the restrictions on them in the transfer market and because of the player’s desire to play in Europe.

Now, the would-be Sheffield Wednesday target has opened up about his decision to sign for his new club that will be competing in Europe this season.

Stuart Armstrong joins Aberdeen

The Scotland international spent part of last season with the Owls as he helped them achieve a midtable finish in the Championship.

Stuart Armstrong did leave Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season following the expiration of his contract; however, he was still a target for the Owls this summer had they been able to sign players.

He has now chosen to join Aberdeen this season, with the dream of playing in Europe being a huge selling point.

Armstrong told club media: “These things always happen fast, but I am delighted to be here.

“I’ve not been back to the city for a long time, so it’s nice to come back full circle in a football sense, which is nice.

“It’s a good footballing decision for me to come here. It’s a chance for me to play competitive, challenging football, and the lure of playing in Europe is exciting. I hope I can add something to the team and help us achieve something special together.”

Stuart Armstrong’s time at Sheffield Wednesday

The 53-cap Scottish international spent part of last season on the books at Sheffield Wednesday, after he had left Vancouver Whitecaps.

Armstrong would only play 11 matches for the Owls after joining the club on 31 January 2025, going on to make his debut against Luton Town.

He was a highly sought-after free agent this summer following the decision to leave Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season, but his future has now been decided, as Armstrong has now signed a two-year deal with Scottish side Aberdeen.
