Sheffield Wednesday have lost several top players this summer but one first-team star is expected to stick around.

Amid the financial problems at Hillsborough, Josh Windass and Michael Smith terminated their contracts and have joined new teams for free.

Windass has explained his Sheffield Wednesday exit this week and is already off the mark for his new club, Wrexham.

While the Owls’ squad has been depleted in the last few months, however, one player is expected to remain despite suggestions he could leave.

Sheffield Wednesday keeping key player praised

Max Lowe had previously handed his notice in at Sheffield Wednesday and was expected to depart on August 15 as a result.

However, reports have since emerged that Lowe will remain with the Owls.

Now, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has commented on the defender staying put, labelling it a ‘massive boost’.

He told Football League World: “Max Lowe agreeing to stay would be a massive boost to Sheffield Wednesday.

“Obviously, defensively, when you had a look, they had to play two really young lads against Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup, saving the legs, obviously, for the Championship games.

“They need points on the board. Obviously, they are many people’s favourites to be relegated, and I think we can all understand the reasons for that.

“So, keeping your experienced players, Max Lowe is 28 years old, in the prime of his physical and mental self and the prime of his career, and absolutely a massive plus to be able to keep him.”

Max Lowe stats

Lowe joined Wednesday from rivals Sheffield United on a free transfer in 2024.

The 28-year-old made 37 appearances across all competitions during his debut campaign at Hillsborough.

Lowe then started as a left-sided centre-back in the Owls’ opening weekend clash with Leicester City.

He is one of the more experienced players left at the club this summer and played 21 minutes in the Carabao Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers earlier this week.
