Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday fans in total agreement over ‘massive talent’ Shea Charles ahead of next season

With the season over, Shea Charles will be heading back to Southampton for the summer, and Sheffield Wednesday fans know he’s destined for great things with the Saints.

Sheffield Wednesday had an odd season, with a decent run of form taking them to within touching distance of being a Championship play-off contender, before slipping away and ending up slap-bang in the middle of the table.

With Danny Rohl’s future very much in doubt, and potential for Dejphon Chansiri to sell the club, Owls fans could be set for a stranger summer, too.

Sadly, with Southampton suffering relegation from the Premier League, we know that Shea Charles’ time at Sheffield Wednesday will come to an end and he will join up with his parent club after a successful loan spell.

Shea Charles is set for a brilliant season with Southampton

Obviously, losing a player as talented and influential as Charles is not good news for Sheffield Wednesday, but their fans are handling the bittersweet departure with grace and gratitude.

One Sheffield Wednesday fan got the conversation going on Twitter/X, writing: “Plenty of time to wax lyrical in years to come about Palmer and Windass. This lad however, head and shoulders best player on the park week in, week out. Outrageous player, from every Wednesday fan, thank you young man, it’s been a joy to watch.”

A Southampton supporter chimed in: “Every Wednesday fan I’ve seen has had nothing but outstanding words for Shea this season. It’s absolutely pivotal we have him alongside [Flynn] Downes next season he’s a massive talent and this loan move for him was so needed.”

Among the replies, another Wednesday supporter added: “Lad is a superstar who will play at the very highest level. The way he has played for us, you would have thought we were his boyhood club not a loan stop. Been a pleasure to watch him and if you have better than him, you have some midfield.”

More said, “He’s so good. You guys need to just appreciate him like have had to as he will definitely be at a top half prem club in next few years,” and “We love him to bits, best loan we’ve had for a long time! You’re lucky to have him.”

Saints fans are very excited about the prospect of Charles returning, with one stating: “If we by some small miracle keep [Mateus] Fernandes too… a Charles, Downes, and Fernandes midfield three would be disgusting in the Championship.”

Shea Charles’ stats for Sheffield Wednesday in 2024/25

To be honest, Shea Charles has been Sheffield Wednesday’s best player this season, and he has absolutely flourished under the guidance of Danny Rohl.

The 21-year-old made 43 appearances in the league (plus one in the FA Cup) for the Owls, scoring one goal and registering five assists.

More importantly, Charles was the beating heart of the Owls midfield, with a 78.9% pass success rate, a 63.9% tackle success rate, and a whopping 5.14 progressive passes made per 90 minutes.

He will take some replacing this summer, but Wednesday may look to loan a Man City starlet to resolve that issue.

Meanwhile, Southampton will be relishing having a player like Charles at their disposal for next season.
