Sunderland will face Coventry City in the Championship play-off semi-finals, and the Black Cats’ barren record makes for worrying reading ahead of the clash.
Sunderland head to Coventry City for the Championship play-offs semi-final first leg on Friday evening, after the Sky Blues secured fifth-place on the 2024/25 second tier final day.
Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats scorched to the summit for several weeks in the early months, but failed to secure top two, and were condemned to the fourth-spot they’d occupied for months.
Coventry were rejuvenated under Frank Lampard and finished the campaign in fifth following their 2-0 win at Middlesbrough.
Ahead of the season-defining play-offs, EFL Analysis has dissected the head-to-head history between Sunderland and Coventry, which will make for concerning viewing for the Black Cats faithful.

Sunderland’s worrying head-to-head record vs Coventry City
Sunderland head into the clash on a five-game winless run, compounded by their home defeat against QPR on the final day, but Lampard still expects their “best” on Friday evening.
Sunderland’s worrying record in the play-offs does not bode well for the upcoming campaign, and another part of the club history supporters will be reticent to remember ahead of the clash is their barren head-to-head history against Coventry.
The Sky Blues have traditionally been Sunderland’s ‘bogey team’, and as such some of fans might’ve been hoping for a Boro win on final day.
Sunderland have failed to beat Coventry in over 18 years, with their most-recent victory coming in the 2-0 second tier home win back in 2007.
Since then, in ten league outings the Black Cats have drawn five times, and lost five times against Coventry.
This season, then-managerless Coventry came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at the Stadium of Light in November, and in March under Lampard hammered the Black Cats 3-0 before the international break thanks to a stellar Haji Wright hat-trick.

Le Bris has promised a repeat of the horror show last time out at Coventry “won’t happen” again, but the Black Cats’ substandard run of form heading into the clash does not bode well for their play-off hopes.

Sunderland on winless run ahead of play-off semi-final vs Coventry City
The Black Cats’ form has been worrying for weeks, compounded by their embarrassing 1-0 defeat to QPR – who were without Marti Cifuentes on final day – saw the Sunderland players booed off the Stadium of Light pitch.
In their final five games of the regular season, Sunderland have been beaten by five teams all below them in the second tier table, including the 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers and the 2-0 loss at Oxford United.
Across those five defeats, the Black Cats have scored only one goal and conceded seven in the process.
Heading into the Championship play-offs campaign in relegation form, against a side the club hasn’t beaten in almost two decades of football, spells serious trouble for Sunderland in the semi-finals.
