Swansea City will be hoping that after a few mediocre years, they can finally push themselves back into the play-off places.
Luka Modric is now a minority shareholder in South Wales, and the Swans have been fighting for Oli McBurnie – although there is competition from across the Championship for the signature of the striker.
Swansea finished 11th in the second tier last season, missing out on the top six by just seven points after a difficult run of form in winter saw them drop close to the relegation places. This form ultimately saw Luke Williams sacked, before Alan Sheehan took on the role of interim head coach.
This inspired the team to much better performances and results, but they were unable to close the gap to the play-off places. Ahead of the new season, EFL Analysis has taken a look at the last time the Swans were in the Premier League.

A dismal end to 2017/18 saw Swansea City relegated from the Premier League
By the time the 2017/18 Premier League campaign started, Swansea were an established Premier League side and in their six seasons prior to that one, they had finished lower than 12th just once.

However, under the guidance of former Derby County manager Paul Clement, the team started poorly and they won just two of their first 15 games. These came against Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town, with frustrations growing.
Clement was sacked just before Christmas, picking up just one more victory with the club rooted to the bottom of the table. Carlos Carvalhal came in to replace him and a strong end to the winter saw the South Wales outfit win four games in seven – losing just one.
Swansea climbed out of the bottom three, but this is where their form would end. A 4-1 win over West Ham United on 3 March would prove to be their last and they lost six of their last nine matches. A 1-0 defeat to Southampton all but relegated Carvalhal’s side, with a win and a 10-goal swing needed on the final day for safety. They lost 2-1 to Stoke City.

Alan Sheehan will be pushing for a play-off spot
After such a strong end to last season, Swansea fans will be hoping that they can push towards the top six in 2025/26.
| Season | Position |
|---|---|
| 2018/19 | 10th |
| 2019/20 | 6th |
| 2020/21 | 4th |
| 2021/22 | 15th |
| 2022/23 | 10th |
| 2023/24 | 14th |
| 2024/25 | 11th |
With every EFL fixture now announced, supporters will be plotting their way to the play-offs but Sheehan not want to get ahead of himself as he looks to continue the two years of progression in the league.
However, there is no denying that improvements need to be made across the starting XI if Swansea are to take that next step and a return to the Premier League does perhaps feel as though it is a couple of years away still.
