Former Swansea City star Lee Trundle has celebrated Cardiff City’s relegation, but also stated why he will miss them in the Championship next season.

Cardiff City suffered relegation this season as Omar Riza’s tenure condemned the Bluebirds to League One.

There was a late change in terms of management at the business end of the season, with Aaron Ramsey taking the reins temporarily, but the player-manager was unable to pull Cardiff out of the hole as they dropped to the third tier.

To make matters worse, Cardiff have swapped places with fellow Welsh side Wrexham, who have undergone an incredible transformation in recent years, notching three successive promotions to overtake the Bluebirds.

Following relegation, Swansea City legend Lee Trundle has spoken about the club’s relegation, letting his Swans roots stand out as he explains the delight he will get from it.

Swansea City legend Lee Trundle on the stick he receives from Cardiff City fans as he basks in Bluebirds relegation

Cardiff City will drop down to the third tier of English football for the first time in 22 years in the upcoming season, a feat that former Swansea City and Wrexham man Lee Trundle has taken plenty of delight from.

Speaking to the Wrexham podcast, Fearless In Devotion, Trundle reflected on why he will enjoy Cardiff’s drop to League One next season.

“I get so much stick on Twitter [from Cardiff fans],” said Trundle. “It’s only a handful of them that do it, but the stick that I get; it’s just in football rivalries if you’re getting stick, this is the best time I will ever have, where they’ve just got relegated.”

However, Trundle also saw the downsides to the Bluebirds dropping down to the third tier.

“Deep down, if I’m honest, I will miss the derby games. I’m glad Wrexham’s come up because it’s still it’s another Welsh derby, but it would have been great if the three of us were in there.”

Cardiff City will have added incentive to return to the Championship

There will be plenty of pressure on Cardiff City to notch an immediate return to the Championship next season for many reasons.

On the surface, the Bluebirds obviously want to be back where they belong in the Championship, but they also won’t want Swansea and Wrexham fans to have the bragging rights of both being a division above.

Swansea fans, especially, will take plenty of satisfaction from Cardiff’s difficult 2024/25 season in which they were relegated, which Trundle clearly shows.

It will be up to Cardiff now to get their managerial appointment spot on and hopefully follow that up with signings that show a clear ambition of promotion from the board. Anything less would be a disappointment.
