A Middlesbrough youngster has been handed the chance to train with England for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

It’s been a while since the Teesside club had a player link up the Three Lions’ senior team, with the last being in September 2018.

Rob Edwards’ Middlesbrough side have been flying high in the Championship this season, winning their first four games to put them top of the league. Fans have already fallen in love with loan signing Sverre Nypan, along with the club’s other smart transfer moves.

Now, Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel has decided to recruit one of their players from England’s Under-20s squad to train with the first team – but he’s not even playing for Boro this season.

Plymouth Argyle loanee Law McCabe training with England’s senior team

Law McCabe was sent out on a season-long loan to League One Plymouth Argyle on deadline day.

Boro boss Rob Edwards explained he saw an opportunity for McCabe to play under Tom Cleverley, who played in his position during his career.

However, he may be questioning his choice now that Tuchel has drafted him in from the Under-20s to train with the Three Lions.

The national team posted an official statement on their X confirming McCabe and fellow England youth player Zach Abbot, who is coming through at Nottingham Forest, joined the senior side for Wednesday’s session.

England face Andorra and Serbia this month in their World Cup qualifiers.

Middlesbrough players who recently played and or trained with England

The last Middlesbrough player to train with England was Marcus Tavernier in September 2018, who was 19 at the time.

Gareth Southgate had brought him in after Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana withdrew from the camp with injuries.

In 2016, Dael Fry trained alongside Wayne Rooney and other household names after being brought into senior training ahead of a World Cup qualifier with Malta.

The last Boro star to be called up for England’s men’s was Ben Gibson in 2017, replacing an injured Chris Smalling. However he didn’t make it onto the pitch.

Jonathan Woodgate earned caps while at the Riverside in 2007.
