Tom Cleverley reveals key reason why he chose Plymouth Argyle, the Green Army will love it

Despite relegation to League One, Plymouth Argyle fans will be very excited for the new season.

Tom Cleverley is the new man in charge of the Pilgrims after Watford controversially sacked the former Manchester United midfielder in May.

Gareth Bale is part of a consortium looking to buy Plymouth and Home Park will be filled with anticipation when the EFL kicks off in August, with fixture release day just a week away.

Cleverley’s arrival in Devon was perhaps a surprise considering the fact that he has spent the entirety of his managerial career with Watford in the Championship, but he has now revealed one of the big reasons why he made the drop to the third tier.

With Ryan Hardie now a Wrexham player, this is going to be a big summer for Plymouth and their new manager will need the backing of his supporters to help push the team on over the course of the season.

However, Cleverley knows exactly what to expect from the Greens and the role that they play at the club will be huge for the team.

He said: “The Green Army played a part in why I’ve come to the football club. I know how passionate they are and how well they support the team, after being sat amongst them last season.

“The form at Home Park has been exceptional and that’s something I have to preserve and maintain, and the Green Army will be very important for us in doing so.”

Tom Cleverley must find form away from Home Park

Plymouth have historically been strong at home and their away form has been what has let them down. This was evident last season, when they won just two games on the road in the league.

Argyle won 11 league matches in 2024/25, and had they just added two more victories away from home, they would have stayed in the Championship.

It is an issue that Cleverley has to address, and after his Watford side struggled on their travels as well, he will already be looking at ways to fix the problem.
