Birmingham City are quickly becoming one of the favourites for promotion to the Premier League.

It’s been a spectacular summer for Blues, and after their record-breaking League One campaign, they have made signings that have put them into contention for a strong finish in the Championship.

Tommy Doyle, who has been described as the ‘signing of the summer’, will be one of the key players for the West Midlands outfit this season. Doyle has already spoken about promotion, although Chris Davies will be keen for his players to not get too far ahead of themselves.

Nevertheless, with Kyogo Furuhashi now on the books at St. Andrew’s, supporters will be excited and owner Tom Wagner has spoken out about the season ahead for Birmingham.

Wagner has been keen to spend in the transfer window, as Blues look for successive promotions and a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2011.

However, the American has made sure not to over-hype the possibility of top flight football returning to Birmingham. He said (via: Telegraph Sport): “You have to have that undefeatable optimism in order to do things that are big.

“We’re competing against every other form of entertainment that’s available to our fans, so we have to deliver something that is worthy of their time and money.

“Now we’re back in the Championship we will be highly competitive on a revenue basis, as compared to any other team. We’re always planning for the future and while it would be nice to be promoted in our 150th anniversary year it’s even more important to remember that it’s always about the next match.”

Jay Stansfield wants Birmingham to break their transfer record this summer, and while that is yet to happen, there have been vast improvements across the squad.

Fabian Hurzeler has explained why Eiran Cashin has joined Blues, with the centre-back returning to the Championship on loan after leaving Derby County in January.

Birmingham lack cover at left-back, but with a month still left in the transfer window, there is more than enough time to make another signing.

The Telegraph have said that the West Midlands outfit are targeting a top two finish, and their ambitions remain very realistic despite only winning promotion to the Championship in April.
