Birmingham City have big ambitions going into the 2025/26 Championship season.

After absolutely hammering the rest of League One, Birmingham City are planning an ‘aggressive’ transfer window.

Tom Wagner wants promotion to the Premier League in 2025/26 and work has already begun to improve their squad.

Birmingham have agreed a deal with Brighton for James Beadle, signing the goalkeeper on loan.

It follows on from EFL Analysis learning that the Blues are targeting five key positions, one of which was a new keeper.

Now, a big claim on the Midlands outfit has been made by one EFL pundit this week.

Big Birmingham City claim made

Birmingham set an EFL record in 2024/25 when they won the league title with 111 points.

Second-place Wrexham were miles behind with 92, and a major claim on Wagner’s side has now been made.

Speaking on the Second Tier podcast this week, Ryan Dilks has said that if Birmingham’s squad from the most recent campaign were competing in the Championship last season, they would have been chasing the play-offs.

He said: “They are arguably the strongest side we’ve ever seen come up to the Championship from League One.

“The only team in recent memory who’s comparable to them is Ipswich, and I think that says a lot about where this team should be batting.

“I don’t think it’s outrageous to say that Birmingham were essentially a Championship play-off chasing side competing in League One last season.  I think that’s roundabouts where I reckon they would have finished if they were in the league this past season, and that’s before they’ve even spent any of the money that we all know they have this coming summer, and by all accounts, they are expected to go big this coming season.”

How Birmingham City will win Championship promotion

Dilks went on to heap praise on the Blues for their recruitment in recent times.

And he added that if they can continue to sign top-class stars, they could very well win back-to-back promotions.

He continued: “The big difference between them and Wrexham for me, they have shown they know how to spend that money very smartly by bringing in players from across the continent. This, for me, is a lot of money mixed with top-class scouting, and so for that reason, I think they’ll be a side to fear next season.

“That’s assuming that they continue to bring in top-class players like they were doing in League One, and then if that does happen for me, I would say that back-to-back promotions is a definite possibility for them.”
