West Bromwich Albion have suffered a transfer blow in the pursuit of a top flight free agent.

With the 2025/26 Championship campaign fast approaching for West Brom, transfer speculation has been rife at the Hawthorns in terms of incomings and outgoings.

Earlier this summer, West Brom signed Nat Phillips from Liverpool, as well as George Campbell and Aune Heggebo.

Regarding outgoings, Bologna bid near £10m for Torbjorn Heggem after his impressive debut season in the Baggies’ defence.

Now, West Brom have been dealt another blow with defenders, after a longstanding Premier League target has opted for a move to the MLS.

West Brom target Harry Toffolo to sign for MLS side Charlotte FC

Harry Toffolo became one of the most sought-after Premier League free agents this summer after his Nottingham Forest exit.

In June, EFL Analysis revealed that West Brom were in the race to sign Toffolo. Our Chief Football correspondent, Graeme Bailey, then said: “There’s been sniffs from West Brom. Quite a few teams in the Championship will be keen.”

Toffolo played four times in the Premier League for Forest last season in his third season at the City Ground.

Now, in another transfer blow for West Brom, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Toffolo is set to sign for MLS side Charlotte FC.

Romano said on X: “Charlotte FC agree deal to sign Harry Toffolo as new fullback as former Nottingham Forest player has accepted all conditions. 3 year contract, he’s already in Charlotte for medical tests.”

Mason has targeted left-backs throughout the summer, and has now missed out on a full-back who Nuno Espirito Santo labelled as “fantastic”, as per Nottingham Forest News.

Ryan Mason needs to sign a left-back for West Brom after Harry Toffolo blow

Earlier in the window, reports emerged that West Brom wanted Jeffrey Schlupp alongside Celtic, Sheffield United and Hull City before Norwich signed Schlupp as a free agent.

Left-back has been a problem area for the Baggies in the market this summer.

After it came to light that West Brom wanted to sign James Penrice from Hearts, EFL Analysis exclusively revealed that Penrice snubbed West Brom for AEK Athens to sign a ‘bumper’ three-year deal with the Greek giants.

Evidently, Mason is looking to upgrade on the Baggies’ existing left-backs, Callum Styles and Gianluca Frabotta.

Now, after failed deals for Penrice, Schlupp, and Toffolo, Mason must delve back into the market for reinforcements in that problem position.
