West Brom play-off place could be in doubt as Tony Mowbray in danger of equalling seven-year record

West Brom are looking to book their place in the Championship play-offs come May, but one record will concern the Baggies.

Unlike the Premier League, where the majority of the table is already decided, there is much to play for in the Championship heading into the final month or so of the season.

The battle for automatic promotion remains tight, while the race to secure a Championship play-off place is heating up.

Sunderland and Burnley are nailed on to take two spots, but who will end up fifth and sixth remains to be seen.

West Brom are predicted to finish in the play-offs by one expert, but a lot can change between now and the end of the season.

Only three points currently separate the Baggies and eighth-place Middlesbrough, with Bristol City just behind Tony Mowbray’s side via goal difference.

West Brom on course to match unwanted record

After a mixed run of form earlier in the season, West Brom have made a late charge into the top-six.

Next up for the West Midlands outfit is a meeting with Norwich City on Saturday afternoon.

The Cannaries are 13th in the Championship and have won just one of their last five, while West Brom are unbeaten over the same period.

However, the clash with Norwich is at Carrow Road and right now, West Brom are in simply dire form away from home.

In fact, they have failed to win any of their last 11 league fixtures on the road – drawing seven and losing four.

Including Norwich, Mowbray and co. have four more away games to play out in 2024/25, and if they fail to win all four, which seems likely given current form, they will match a seven-year record.

West Brom last had a longer winless run away from the Hawthorns between September 2017 and March 2018.

They were in the Premier League at the time and went a staggering 15 matches without picking up a single victory.

Tony Mowbray provides Josh Maja injury update

If their poor away form does indeed continue, there’s every chance Boro or Bristol City knock them out of the top-six.

And to make matters worse, Mowbray has confirmed this week that the Baggies won’t be able to call on star striker Josh Maja to help them clinch a top-six place.

Speaking in his pre-Norwich presser, the former Middlesbrough ace confirmed Maja will not return this season unless West Brom do make the play-offs.

He said: “I saw Maja on Tuesday, happy, nice and smiley but still feels as if he is a little bit away but hopefully, if we can extend the season he might have a part to play.

“I’m sure it has been tough. He’s been in a brace thing on his left most of the time I’ve been here.”

He added: “You’d have to say Maja is a miss to the football club with his goals that he obviously could bring and has brought already the first half of the season.”
