What Danny Rohl just said on his Sheffield Wednesday future is telling as potential exit looms

Sheffield Wednesday fans will fear that their final two Championship games could be the last they see of manager Danny Rohl.

Under the ownership problems caused by the terrible decision-making of Dejphon Chansiri, the appointment of Danny Rohl has been his only recent success story.

The German tactician was hired in October 2023 with the side rooted to the bottom of the Championship table after the disastrous short tenure of Xisco Munoz.

Rohl somehow kept the Owls in the second tier, and in 2024/25, Sheffield Wednesday have flirted with a Championship play-off finish, but they’ve been plagued by inconsistency and are now resigned to mid-table obsecurity.

That is some incredible progression considering the 35-year-old has been given hardly any money spend, and that could result in his departure from Hillsborough this summer.

Danny Rohl’s latest comments on Sheffield Wednesday future

Although Moroccan billionaire Anas Sefrioui is interested in acquiring Sheffield Wednesday from Chansiri, a huge change in ownership doesn’t alter the chance of the manager staying.

Rohl is increasingly likely to leave Wednesday, perhaps joining a club able to match his ambition and provide him with the tools to succeed.

Southampton were interested in Rohl, but any club that wants him will have to pay his £5 million release clause, with many sides already struggling financially as it is.

Rohl slammed his Wednesday players after the disappointing 2-0 loss to Stoke City, although they bounced back instantly with a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough to dent their top-six hopes.

Now, ahead of their home clash against Portsmouth, the German has spoken about his future, claiming Chansiri already knows what he plans to do once the season ends.

“The chairman of the club knows my decision,” he told the Star. “This is important and the club know what is in my mind. I think today, tomorrow is not the day to speak about this, it is about after the season. We want to finish the season and then let’s see in which direction it goes.

“I am very clear, for me it was important that the club knows not too late what is in my mind. From this point we carry on, I must say the players gave me a big, big lift on Monday (win v Middlesbrough) and it was great to see how much they invest and that we can win against big teams in this league. It was a good signal.

“I spoke with the club and now we will see in the final week, in the next days what it means and what we can and can’t do. For me it was important that I informed the club earlier on what is in my mind.”

Rohl’s terrifying prediction for Sheffield Wednesday

During the turmoil of unpaid players and rumours surrounding the ownership, Rohl is the glue that is holding Wednesday together, and it’s hard to imagine where they’d be without him.

He’s performed miracles in the hot seat and is deserving of a more attractive job, with Rohl already issuing a terrifying prediction about what could happen to the football club once he leaves.

“If you want to improve as a club, you have to do a lot of things right in the summer, otherwise – and this is what I tell you – next season will be a big, big fight to stay in this league,” Rohl said.

“We have a group of players that are not able to play at this level – not my football. I must say this today very directly.

“I think I protect all my players again and again, I take all the responsibility, I give chances now to players to see what they can do, but the results at the moment are not what they should be.”

Whoever eventually replaces Rohl in dugout would have to do something special to beat the job he’s done, as working under difficult circumstances isn’t easy for any manager.
