Sheffield Wednesday starlet is a wanted man, but keeping him could be the best thing the Owls do this summer

Nobody knows what the future holds for Sheffield Wednesday, with potential new owners, managerial changes, and player departures mooted ahead of the summer.

A promising season for the Owls has slowly turned into what will likely be a commendable yet uninspiring midtable finish under Danny Rohl.

Sheffield Wednesday had flirted with the play-offs briefly, but inconsistency has plagued the S6 side over the past few weeks.

Turbulent times may lie ahead for Wednesday now, for better or worse. A potential buyer for the club has emerged of late, with Anas Sefrioui taking a close look at Dejphon Chansiri’s position at Hillsborough.

However, there may also be a new Sheffield Wednesday manager at the helm next season, too, as Rohl is looking likely to leave, with interest from Southampton and Leicester.

Multiple clubs are keen on Pierce Charles

Players will surely follow Rohl out of the club this summer. Some, Wednesday may not be too sorry to see the back of, while others, they will be desperate to keep.

Pierce Charles is one that has been attracting attention all season, but more so of late since he overtook James Beadle and was given the nod as Wednesday’s starting goalkeeper.

The latest rumours (via the Sheffield Star) suggest Charles is wanted by clubs in the Premier League, the top end of the Championship, and even out in Germany with Bundesliga sides keeping tabs on the 19-year-old.

Thankfully for the Owls, Charles has two years left on his current contract at the club. While that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re guaranteed to keep hold of him, it does mean they would at least be in a strong position to command a decent fee for the young goalkeeper if he did insist on leaving.

Pierce Charles can be the spine of this Sheffield Wednesday team

However, regardless of the fee (unless someone offers crazy money, of course), Sheffield Wednesday should refuse to sell Pierce Charles, as he is simply too important to the project the club is building right now.

He’s a player that has come through the ranks at Hillsborough, and now commands the number one shirt for Wednesday. With Beadle likely to head back to Brighton in the summer, Charles will be the undisputed ‘keeper for next season, regardless of who is in charge.

Having a young, very talented goalkeeper who has grown up at the club is exactly the kind of thing that can give fans something to really cheer about. Selling him, on the other hand, would only add fuel to the fire for those who are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the club.

It’s been a long time since they had something to genuinely cheer about, and even longer since Sheffield Wednesday were last in the top flight.

While Pierce Charles is not necessarily the magical solution to getting them back in the big time, he’s exactly the kind of player the Owls need to be retaining if they want to build towards a successful future.
