Jamie Vardy can escape his ‘miserable’ Leicester City nightmare by joining Championship rivals, it makes perfect sense

With Leicester City heading down to the Championship, we expect plenty of change at the club, and Jamie Vardy is one player who could well be moving on this summer.

After a bitterly disappointing season in the top flight, Leicester’s fate was finally confirmed on Sunday with defeat to Liverpool.

We now know the Foxes are one of the teams to make up the Championship roster for 2025/26, and on paper, they should be a contender for promotion again.

But, with financial issues behind the scenes, Ruud van Nistelrooy on his way out, and a disillusioned fanbase falling out of love with the club this season, it could well be a tumultuous season in the second tier.

One player very likely to leave it Jamie Vardy, with the veteran striker out of contract in the summer, and we think we know where he should end up next season.

Jamie Vardy is out of contract and out of patience at Leicester City

The 38-year-old could bring an end to his 13-year stay at Leicester this summer when his contract expires, and it is still not known whether he will renew, or whether the club even wants him to.

All the attention on the Championship this weekend was concerned with teams looking to make it out of the division, but the arrival of Leicester is a big deal, of course. And the club needs to prepare accordingly.

Vardy himself admitted it was a ‘miserable’ season for Leicester in the Premier League, and while his facing up to the truth and not shirking responsibility is honourable and earned him brownie points with the fans, it perhaps didn’t sit well with the club’s hierarchy.

His contributions over the years would earn him a lifetime deal at Leicester, really, but the club may feel it’s time to cut ties with the past, and so too may Vardy.

Sheffield Wednesday move would be a wildcard play for Jamie Vardy

Let’s assume Vardy does choose to move on, there can be no better club for him to join than Sheffield Wednesday.

He may be intrinsically associated with Leicester now, but the Owls are his boyhood club and a return to S6 just makes perfect sense, especially given the stage of his career Vardy is entering now.

What could be better for the veteran than to head back to his roots, where he would be instantly embraced by the fans with adoration, and have one last chance at proving he’s got what it takes in the Championship?

The Owls will be going through their own transition period this summer if Danny Rohl departs as we expect, but this is a club that relishes the more eccentric, lively, and passionate style of player.

Vardy surely has the ability to deliver goals, he would bring the kind of energy and desire Sheffield Wednesday have lacked at times this season, and he’d not come with a big transfer fee, which would suit Dejphon Chansiri to the ground.

If a new manager does come in, they could do far worse than bringing in the experienced head and winning mentality of Jamie Vardy. Sheffield Wednesday fans would love it, so make it happen Chansiri!
