Leicester City are beginning to prepare for life after Ruud van Nistelrooy, with a list of candidates now drawn up.

The Foxes are once again set to be plying their trade in the Championship come the start of the 2025/26 season.

Defeat to Liverpool over the weekend confirmed Leicester City’s relegation to the second tier after just one season back in the top flight.

It was a campaign to forget for fans and players, with Jamie Vardy’s message after their relegation was confirmed incredibly telling.

With nothing left to play for in the current season, attention has now turned toward the future of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Leicester City plan to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy

A hint over Van Nistelrooy’s Leicester future was dropped on Tuesday ahead of their meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers on April 26.

And while it looks as though the Dutchman will remain in charge for that clash, his long-term future appears to be very much in doubt.

This comes with it reported on April 22 that the Midlands outfit have now drawn up a shortlist of potential replamcnets.

The update comes via Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett, who named Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl among the candidates.

He wrote: “#Lcfc have drawn up a shortlist of possible candidates if they decide to replace Van Nistelrooy – it includes Lee Carsley, Danny Rohl and Russell Martin, I’m told. Looks increasingly likely RVN will leave before next season, but more discussions will take place later this week.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy sacking could hurt Leicester City financially

A report from the Telegraph back in November 2024 claimed Leicester’s owner spoke to the players about sacking Van Nistelrooy.

When doing so, he is understood to have said that sacking another manager would put a strain on the club’s financial situation, which is already delicate.

So, not only would Ruud’s dismissal hamper Leicester financially, but they could also struggle to afford one man on this list.

As we exclusively revealed recently, Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday release clause stands at nearly £5m.

Granted, the Foxes are now set to benefit from parachute payments, but it remains to be seen if they can, or should at least, pay off one manager before spending big to land another.
