Why Bobby Clark rejected Premier League clubs including Sunderland in favour of Derby County move

Make no mistake about it, this has been an excellent summer for Derby County.

The Rams have made 10 signings in the transfer window, with Carlton Morris the first through the door back at the very start of July, while Bobby Clark and Dion Sanderson were added to the ranks on Tuesday evening.

John Eustace still needs more depth out on the wings, and he also seems committed to bringing in a right-back, despite having two bids turned down for Sturm Graz full-back Max Johnston.

However, it is the signing of Clark that has captured the eye of supporters and now it has been reported that Derby beat not only Newcastle United to the signature of the 20-year-old.

Derby County beat Premier League sides to Bobby Clark

The Magpies were offered the services of Clark, with the midfielder leaving his boyhood club to join Liverpool as a youngster, but they rejected that offer.

Nevertheless, according to The Chronicle, both Leeds United and Sunderland were interested in bringing the RB Salzburg ace to England this summer.

However, with no guarantee of regular football, he opted to join Derby in the Championship with the hope of getting consistent minutes out on the pitch as the Rams aim for a mid-table finish in the second tier.

The report also states that Newcastle were the only club that Clark would have joined as a squad player, but the Eustace effect looks to have worked once again.

John Eustace may still want one more creative midfielder

While he has stacked out his midfield, the Rams’ manager may still want to bring in another more advanced player in the coming weeks.

Derby struggled with creativity last season, and they often relied on set-pieces to find the back of the net. Although a useful tactic, there is no guarantee that it will work once again.

Clark may be utilised in that attacking role with David Ozoh and Ebou Adams providing cover behind, although Kenzo Goudmijn will also have something to say about that.

Nonetheless, there is no doubting that Eustace has had his transfer wish granted this summer, and Derby do look considerably stronger heading into gameweek one.
