Amid the international break, the Saints boss has been putting his money where his mouth is on the training pitch.

Southampton have made a solid start to Championship life under summer appointment Will Still, with five points from the first 12 on offer ahead of the international break.

On opening weekend, Southampton beat Wrexham 2-1 after an inspired comeback victory during Still’s maiden outing in the St Mary’s dugout.

Following that, draws with Watford and Ipswich Town were sandwiched between a loss at home to high-flying Stoke City, leaving Still’s Saints in 13th.

In footage that will delight the Saints faithful, it is clear that Still has been taking notes from one of his Southampton stars’ displays during the Dragons comeback.

Will Still scores training ground goal similar to Ryan Manning’s vs Wrexham

Ahead of opening weekend, Still expected a tough test against Wrexham, and the first half did not go to plan for Southampton with Josh Windass’ penalty-kick opener.

However, Still’s half-time magic seemed to work for the Saints, with two injury-time goals from Ryan Manning and Jack Stephens securing a dramatic comeback victory.

Southampton’s equaliser came with a stunning long-range free-kick from Manning, which beat Dragons goalkeeper Danny Ward.

After Still posted some training ground footage of his own Southampton free-kick, he has clearly been taking some tips from his full-back with a deft strike from similar range.

Although Manning scored with his left and Still’s was with his right foot, the highly rated coach will likely make no secret of his strike around the Southampton dressing room.

What Ryan Manning thinks of Southampton boss Will Still

Manning endured a testing top flight season last term for Southampton, making only 24 Premier League appearances amid the Saints’ relegation.

The Republic of Ireland international’s best career form to date came in the 2022/23 season at Swansea City, in which he scored five goals and notched ten assists in 43 league outings in his final year in Wales.

Still will be hoping Manning can continue his early-season form into the rest of the campaign, and the full-back has already heaped praise on the Saints boss during his short tenure.

After the Wrexham comeback, Manning told Southampton’s website: “I think coming off the back of last year being so tough, I think it showed great character, which is so important.

“I think that’s just massive to give us that confidence. It probably comes from the gaffer and the staff so far in pre-season.

“He’s just constantly going on about how it’s a group effort, everyone in training is pushing each other for a starting XI spot.”
