Calls for Ruben Selles to ‘resign’ were made after first game, Sheffield United boss has lost the fanbase

Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles has been up against the cosh ever since the season opener against Bristol City, where one fan made an incredible call, which, in hindsight, only gave a preview of the difficulty that would follow.

This season has already sparked trouble for Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles, whose side have been far off the pace.

With zero points and one goal to show for their opening four games of the 2025/26 Championship season, Sheffield United’s difficulties have sparked unrest amongst the fanbase, with some calling for Selles to be replaced at this early stage of the campaign.

Problems have been obvious ever since the season opener, which saw Sheffield United fall to a 4-1 defeat against Bristol City

The crushing defeat against the Robins saw Selles suffer immediate criticism, and while one fan’s claim was initially laughed at, Sheffield United may have benefited if they had already decided to take action, as the supporter called for.

Sheffield United fan who called for Ruben Selles’ dismissal after Bristol City defeat may have been correct

Sheffield United’s 4-1 loss to Bristol City, in hindsight, was a sign of things to come for Ruben Selles’ side, and even worse.

Since then, the Blades have been unable to find the back of the net in the Championship, and three further defeats have sparked questions over Selles’ future.

While the majority of the Sheffield United fanbase wants Selles to be sacked, according to a recent social media poll, there was a selection of fans, who were in the minority, who wanted an immediate change after the Bristol City defeat.

When calling in to Football Heaven, one Sheffield United fan asked for the manager to resign over a ‘shambolic’ performance.

“Unfortunately, I can’t get the owners to resign because they’re the owners,” said the fan. “But I can ask for the manager to resign because that was completely shambolic.

“That was a complete shambles. We have seen, despite the results in pre-season, how wide open we are at the back.

“What I would say to the manager and the owners is, how have we arrived at game number one with a team that was announced today that was clearly not up to it?”

Ruben Selles has no further excuses ahead of Sheffield United vs Ipswich Town

Sheffield United will travel to Ipswich Town this weekend, where it feels as though Ruben Selles’ job security is balancing on the result against a struggling Tractor Boys’ side.

The Blades’ boss admittedly had very little backing from the Sheffield United board by that point, with recruitment being sub-par in the early stages of the season.

However, Sheffield United have now brought in reinforcements that should propel this side up the Championship table, meaning that all eyes are now on Selles to respond by producing results on the pitch.

The trip to Ipswich Town looks set to be pivotal, as with the summer window now closed, calls for further reinforcements can not take pressure off the Sheffield United boss.
