Five players destined for Championship next season regardless of League One play-off result, Charlton should be worried

It’s make or break for Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient this weekend, with the League One play-off final providing one team with the chance to jump to the second tier of the EFL.

Nathan Jones and his Charlton side are the favourites going into the clash at Wembley, at least based on our team’s predictions for the final, that is.

The Addicks became a real force in League One as the season went on, but they now face an exciting Leyton Orient side full of creative, attacking talent like Jamie Donley and Charlie Kelman.

It’s sure to be a fascinating affair on Sunday afternoon, with two characters in the dugouts and plenty of great players on the pitch. But, for the losing team, there’s the risk that those players may well move on this summer.

Five players who should secure Championship moves this summer

Thierry Small

While Luton’s Alfie Doughty will be a top target for Championship clubs this summer after the Hatters suffered relegation, a cheaper and younger option will be Thierry Small.

If Charlton don’t go up, they’ll almost certainly lose the 20-year-old. He’s played 47 times this term, scoring two goals and bagging six assists for the Addicks and has looked mature beyond his years.

Conor Coventry

In the middle of the park, there has been no player in League One that can match Conor Coventry when it comes to tackles made this season (127) and the combative 25-year-old looks ready for Championship football.

Whether that’s with Charlton or not depends on the result this weekend, but we’d be very surprised if the likes of Birmingham City don’t take a look at the Irishman as they look to flesh out their squad this summer.

Tyreece Campbell

We know plenty of clubs are in the market for wide players this summer. You only have to look at Birmingham’s pursuit of Kwame Poku to see how valuable that kind of talent is, but again, a cheaper option may be Charlton’s Tyreece Campbell.

The 21-year-old has registered nine goals this season (plus one assist) and is arguably Nathan Jones’ most dangerous player. There’s simply no way he stays in the third tier next season.

Ethan Galbraith

Leyton Orient have largely relied on loan players this season, but they do have a couple of their own stars that can be crucial to the outcome on Sunday.

Ethan Galbraith is the brightest of them all, and the central midfielder is almost certain to be playing in the Championship next season with or without Orient. They turned down £1m for Galbraith in January, but they’ll surely lose him if they fail this weekend.

Ollie O’Neill

One player who has slipped under the radar a little for Orient this term is Ollie O’Neill, but the young winger scored a crucial goal in the semi-final victory over Stockport to add to his tally for the season — he now has three goals and three assists in 35 games.

O’Neill would be a great fit for a lower-half Championship team looking to develop some young talent next season. Or, maybe even someone like Sunderland might fancy the Irishman as a replacement for the outgoing Tommy Watson.
