Forget Gus Hamer, two more Chris Wilder favourites must start for Sheffield United vs Charlton Athletic

All eyes will be on Bramall Lane this weekend as Chris Wilder returns to the dugout for Sheffield United, and there are some big selection decisions he will need to make.

After the disastrous and very brief reign of Ruben Selles, Sheffield United called on Chris Wilder to rescue them once more.

Wilder has been making changes to his backroom staff already. But, after the Blades’ horrendous 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town last weekend, we’ll need to see some drastic changes on the pitch, too.

Up next is a clash with Charlton Athletic. In the past, Wilder has lost his opening games as Sheffield United manager. With a few team selection decisions, though, he can correct that record today.

Ben Godfrey has to be dropped, Tyrese Campbell surely returns

That debacle against Ipswich called into question plenty of United players, but none more so than Ben Godfrey. The defender was at fault for at least a couple of the goals conceded, looked shaky on the ball, and was eventually hooked off by Selles.

There’s simply no way he can start the next game. Instead, Wilder must surely call on one of his former favourites, Femi Seriki, to come in at right-back.

He played 25 times in the league under Wilder last season, and though he was largely second-choice to loanee Hamza Choudhury, Seriki rarely let the Blades down when he did feature. That solid, reliable presence is essential if Wilder is to steady the ship in defence.

Meanwhile, the attacking areas have been a huge issue for Sheffield United this season. Simply put, the Blades have been lacking a clinical edge in front of goal.

Tom Cannon started the last game, but the £10m man is still yet to find his shooting boots. Wilder could call on new man Danny Ings to lead the line, but it’s hard to imagine him leaving out Tyrese Campbell at this point.

Campbell bagged 11 goals for the Blades last term, including a momentous goal at Wembley in the play-off final. Wilder trusts Campbell, he knows the forward will work hard and that he fits his style of play perfectly.

And, for the player himself, Campbell will be hungry to reclaim a starting spot and fire United to their first win of the season. It’s almost inevitable that he will deliver against Charlton.

Chris Wilder has to instill togetherness and work ethic in Sheffield United squad

It will be fascinating to see not only what Wilder’s team sheet looks like, but how different players react to the new era at Bramall Lane.

Wilder has praised Sheffield United’s new signings, but there are concerns that some may be frozen out. We know the Blades boss is fiercely loyal, and surely the players he left behind will be higher in the pecking order than any new arrivals.

However, we are told that the Sheffield United squad is largely happy Wilder is back. Obviously, Gus Hamer will return to the starting line-up after his shock dropping against Ipswich, and the playmaker will be crucial to any success Wilder has in his third term with the Blades.

One thing’s for sure: Wilder needs to get this team working hard again. He also needs to ensure that all players, new and old, work together effectively.

It seemed the squad downed tools for Selles almost immediately. That cannot and surely will not happen under Wilder.

One characteristic that has always defined Wilder’s teams is togetherness and team spirit. Talent can only take you so far, but that wily, never-say-die attitude will carry United to the next level this term.
