It’s a fresh yet familiar start for Sheffield United this weekend, as Chris Wilder prepares for his first game back in charge of the club.

This will be game 306 for the 57-year-old in the dugout for the South Yorkshire outfit as Charlton Athletic make the trip up from London to face the Championship’s bottom side.

Ruben Selles was sacked on Sunday evening, less than 48 hours after his former side were beaten 5-0 by Ipswich Town at Portman Road, his sixth defeat from six games in charge of the club in all competitions.

Nevertheless, there is plenty of work to do for Wilder at Sheffield United, with one particular department a huge concern heading into this weekend.

Sheffield United are the least clinical team in the Championship

EFL Analysis has backed the Blades to beat Charlton on Saturday, a result that may well take them out of the relegation zone completely. However, Wilder has to get his team scoring once again.

So far, Sheffield United have found the back of the net just once in the league, with that goal coming against Bristol City in a 4-1 defeat on the opening day of the campaign.

Yet, with goals at a premium, chances are coming with the Blades registering an xG of 5.2 from their games so far. While it is not the most alarming of statistics right now, they are the least clinical side in the division.

According to FBref, Sheffield United have scored just 0.02 goals per shot this season, with Charlton following them with 0.04. Derby County are the most clinical side in the division, finding the back of the net from 0.18 shots. Wilder has to take a leaf out of John Eustace’s book in the coming weeks.

Chris Wilder can get the best out of Tyrese Campbell

With goals at a premium, this is the opportunity for those in the forward positions to impress the returning Blades boss and prove to him why they should be the starting striker.

Tom Cannon has struggled since joining from Leicester City in the January transfer window, while Danny Ings still has work to do to get back to full fitness after joining as a free agent.

However, the focus will be on Tyrese Campbell – a player who thrived under Wilder last season at Sheffield United.

He scored 10 league goals for the Blades in 2024/25, and while not the most exciting of returns, he was crucial in helping the team to the play-off final and this is his chance to make himself a hero once again.
