Forget Tyrhys Dolan, John Eustace must pursue deal for £2.5m winger who pained Derby County in January

Signing number five of the summer is about to make their way through the door at Derby County.

After defeat in the Gold Cup final with the USA, Patrick Agyemang is set to make a £5.8m move to the Rams in the coming days following his medical, as per a report from John Percy.

Carlton Morris was the first to arrive in the East Midlands following the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign, before a trio of signings on 1 July saw Danny Batth, Andreas Weimann and Richard O’Donnell make their way to Pride Park.

Batth has already called John Eustace ‘outstanding’, and the pull that the former Blackburn Rovers boss has is significant. Now, he must use that to try and entice a Sheffield Wednesday star to Derby ahead of a fire sale at Hillsborough.

Derby County must pursue deal for Djeidi Gassama

It was reported by Alan Nixon on Sunday that following the Owls’ financial problems, both Pierce Charles and Djeidi Gassama could be sold this summer in an effort to raise funds.

The latter has a £2.5m price tag, and Blackburn have already made an enquiry about the winger. Valerien Ismael will not want Eustace to ruin his summer further, but the 21-year-old would be a superb addition in DE24.

Derby need wide players, and with uncertainty surrounding Tyrhys Dolan’s next destination, Gassama could be a better option to bring in.

The Mauritanian ace made two appearances for France’s U20s side in 2022 and he was excellent for the Owls last season as they finished mid-table – despite their off-field issues.

Djeidi Gassama caused the Rams great issues in January

Sheffield Wednesday are under a three-window transfer ban and this summer is going to be extremely tough for them, with Danny Rohl informing the players that he will leave.

Derby must pounce, and they have first-hand experience of Gassama’s talents after he tormented their defence during a 4-2 victory for the Owls on 1 January.

He scored the third of those goals, sprinting past Craig Forsyth with ease before dispatching the ball past Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.

That threat on the flank will be highly desirable to Eustace, and he must look to hijack any potential deal that his former club are trying to work with Sheffield Wednesday this summer.
