Four Middlesbrough stars could be about to play their last game for club vs Coventry City

Middlesbrough will play out their final game of the 2024/25 normal Championship season against Coventry City.

Boro drew 0-0 with Norwich City last weekend, seeing their play-off chances take a major hit.

Middlesbrough fans hit out at Michael Carrick after the result, with his future at the Riverside Stadium expected to depend on what happens going into this Saturday’s fixture.

The Teessiders have slipped down to ninth in the Championship, and their fate is no longer in their own hands.

They must beat Coventry and hope the two teams above them, who have tricky fixtures, drop points in their meetings.

Given Middlesbrough’s recent form, however, it does seem unlikely they will be competing in the play-offs next month.

With this in mind, we have taken a look at four players who could line out in a Boro shirt for the final time on May 3.

Hayden Hackney

Hayden Hackney has been one of Boro’s best performers across the 2024/25 season but his future is almost certainly away from the Riverside.

The England U21 international has had interest from the likes of Crystal Palace, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur throughout the season.

And we understand Hackney will leave Middlesbrough in the summer if they do not secure promotion to the Premier League, which obviously looks very unlikely to happen now.

Rav van den Berg

Rav van den Berg is in a very similar situation to Hackney, having been looked at by a number of clubs in the last 12 months.

The Dutchman was Boro’s Player of the Season during his debut campaign, and though injury has hampered him this term, he remains a top prospect.

EFL Analysis learned that Van den Berg is likely to leave Middlesbrough if they don’t go up, with the Bundesliga a potential destination for the stopper.

Anfernee Dijksteel

Anfernee Dijksteel is out of contract on Teesside on June 30 and is not expected to renew his contract.

The right-back has had a mixed season with patches of quality followed by some underwhelming displays.

He’s likely to start against Coventry amid Luke Ayling’s injury, but as of right now, will be departing for free.

Ryan Giles

Ryan Giles had a superb 2022/23 season when he joined Middlesbrough on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

As a result, there was much excitement from fans when in January, he returned on a short-term deal.

Giles has failed to live up to expectations, however, and has been reduced to a substitute role. He’ll more than likely come off the bench if Boro are chasing the game, but he hasn’t shown enough to warrant the North East outfit pursuing a permanent deal in the summer.
