Sheffield United are rock bottom of the Championship after Ruben Selles’ opening four league games and rumours of potential replacements are already swelling.
Much-loved manager Chris Wilder left the club by mutual consent in the summer after missing out on promotion to the Premier League in a play-off final defeat to Sunderland despite picking up 90 points across the season.
The Blades then appointed ex-Hull City manager Selles, and have since suffered their worst start to a Championship season ever at this point in the campaign. EFL Analysis’ chief football correspondent Graeme Bailey understands the Sheffield United hierarchy are willing to give the Spaniard time.
However, should the Blades come back from what will have been a much-needed international break regroup and lose to Ipswich Town, more pressure will be piled on Selles. Sheffield Wednesday’s former manager Danny Rohl is not an option despite previous reports – but there are four managers who could be a good fit at Bramall Lane.

Managers Sheffield United could replace Ruben Selles with
Michael Carrick
Michael Carrick may not have got Middlesbrough promoted, but he came close to doing so during his time at the Riverside Stadium. While Boro dropped out of the play-offs last term, which led to his sacking, Carrick would certainly be able to get Sheffield United pushing at the right end of the table.
He stepped in for Wilder at Middlesbrough and took them from 21st to fourth, after all.

Steve Cooper
Steve Cooper has been out of work since November 2024 after he was dismissed as Leicester City boss.
The former Swansea City manager won promotion to the Premier League with Nottingham Forest in 2022, so is exactly the pedigree of manager the Blades want. He was linked with the Middlesbrough vacancy over the summer, but a Bramall Lane appointment could be the perfect return to management.

Sean Dyche
Sean Dyche and the Championship go hand in hand. He won promotion from the second tier in 2016 with Burnley and has a strong record in the division.
He has been without work since he left Everton in January, but a move to the league below to a club wanting to win promotion would suit him well. He actually played a reserve match for United in 1994, so he’s no stranger to the red and white side of Sheffield.

Chris Wilder
This one feels inevitable. Wilder has taken charge of over 300 Blades games, and there’s a reason why some United fans can’t get him out of their head since his departure and after this season’s horrendous start.
This may be more of a heart over head choice, but it’s one that would make sense and would be a certain fix – but the United board could be thinking more about the long term with their next appointment.
