Norwich City’s £6.9m summer signing has huge point to prove after Josh Sargent saga

Norwich City have built a team that looks more than capable of finishing in the top six of the Championship this season.

Throughout this summer, there have been plenty of eyes on the Canaries, with many expecting them to take the next step and work their way into the play-offs after a difficult end to 2024/25.

Liam Manning has been backed by Ben Knapper in the transfer window, and despite losing Borja Sainz to Porto and Marcelino Nunez for £10m to Ipswich Town, it’s been a positive few months at Carrow Road.

The arrival of Mathias Kvistgaarden for £6.9m in July was met with plenty of excitement from Norwich supporters, but there is one issue that the Dane now faces, and he has plenty to prove.

Mathias Kvistgaarden will have to oust Josh Sargent at Norwich City

The 23-year-old arrived as the Canaries’ standout signing of the summer, and there is no doubt that he is a work in progress.

However, with Josh Sargent still a Norwich player, the striker may have concerns that he will not get the opportunity to lead the line at the very start of his career at Carrow Road.

Kvistgaarden has featured in all of the first four matches of the season for his new side, but he is yet to find the back of the net, and he has played just 108 minutes.

It comes after he scored 11 goals in 19 matches for Brondby in SuperLiga in 2024/25, and this is proof of his ability to find the back of the net and be the player that can take on the responsibility of being the main striker in the Championship.

Liam Manning has the perfect selection headache

Keeping hold of Sargent can only be seen as a huge positive for Norwich, and it is the exact way that Manning wanted to end the summer.

However, it now means he has two very good strikers at his disposal who are fighting over the same position.

For Kvistgaarden, this must be frustrating as he may have believed that he was going to get the opportunity to make it his own, but Sargent has scored four goals in four games and it will be tough to dislodge him.

The Danish forward played in behind the USA international at the weekend, and this could be a position that he finds himself operating in for the foreseeable future.
