Sheffield United’s defeat to Ipswich Town was inevitable after Ruben Selles made one personnel decision that made very little sense.
Sheffield United suffered defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road, making it five successive losses for Ruben Selles.
The Blades showed very little sign of being able to weather the Ipswich Town storm, with Jaden Philogene running the show and bagging a hat-trick against a hapless Sheffield United defence. Michael Cooper also struggled by not covering himself in glory for any of the goals.
It was always set to be a difficult contest for Sheffield United and Selles, but things were made far more challenging because of the left-field side that was named to take on the Tractor Boys, which understandably led to many being confused by the Spanish boss’s decision-making.

Ruben Selles’ decision to drop Gus Hamer left Sheffield United with difficulties
Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles raised eyebrows with his team selection at Portman Road, with Gus Hamer notably dropping to the bench.
While it is understandable that Selles opted to make changes after four successive defeats, deciding that Hamer was part of the problem was a bold call to make, which in hindsight, massively backfired.
With no Hamer in the side, Callum O’Hare moved further forward, but his impact was limited in attack, as was the entire Sheffield United side.
In addition, Selles turned to Tom Cannon to lead the line, who has been stripped of confidence after a difficult period for Sheffield United, a decision that also left fans understandably confused.

Ruben Selles’ gamble massively backfired
Sheffield United’s start to the season has been dire, and much of that falls on the shoulders of Ruben Selles, who is already feeling the pressure.
When you are under pressure, it is understandable to change things up in the hope of a different outcome, but it should never come by sacrificing your top talent and dropping him to the bench.
After the teams were released, Sheffield United fans understandably held out very little hope for the game, where Hamer’s presence was clearly missing.
Selles looks to be out of luck now, and it has been reported that his time could be drawing to a close in S2, with Chris Wilder being sounded out for a return to Sheffield United.
