Three things Sheffield Wednesday must do while under embargo, including Danny Rohl solution and key contracts

Things are going from bad to worse for Sheffield Wednesday right now, but the club can do a few things to improve the mess they are in.

Thanks to Dejphon Chansiri failing to pay the wages of his players and staff for May, Sheffield Wednesday find themselves under a transfer embargo.

How long that lasts depends on whether the club solves that issue and makes a satisfactory response to the EFL within the next week. Failure to do so will result in a three-window embargo, plus a potential points deduction.

In many ways, administration could be the best outcome for Wednesday, but hoping for that outcome feels a little bit nihilistic.

Still, with the ability to sign new players taken away, the Owls need to get proactive and fix things closer to home. Here are three key tasks that should be on Sheffield Wednesday’s to-do list right now.

Sheffield Wednesday must secure top players to new contracts

Before this whole financial fiasco unfolded, we reported that Sheffield Wednesday and Barry Bannan had agreed a new contract. Naturally, that has stalled now since he’s not been paid.

Getting that one contract resolved as a priority would be huge in putting a small smile on the faces of the Wednesday fans, at least.

Likewise, the Owls have key man Djeidi Gassama with just one year left on his current deal, and top young players like Pierce Charles and Gabriel Otegbayo tied down until 2027.

Persuading all of them (or indeed just one of them) to commit their long-term future to the club would be a massive boost and ensure that the spine of the team sticks together regardless of what happens behind the scenes.

Give Sheffield Wednesday youngsters their chance to shine

Speaking of youngsters, the Sheffield Wednesday academy has been given little chance to shine in recent years, and that has to change.

While Otegbayo and Charles have come through the academy to establish themselves as first-team players, there are plenty more who deserve a chance. If no new signings can be made, the Owls won’t have a choice but to blood the youngsters, and that can be a blessing in disguise.

Bailey Cadamarteri enjoyed a loan spell with Lincoln City in League One last season and is ready to step up. With the well-documented struggles of Ike Ugbo in attack, Sheffield Wednesday can’t exactly lose by giving Cadamarteri the minutes he deserves.

More of a risk, but an exciting one nonetheless, is Will Grainger. The 16-year-old is a raw talent, but one that could well explode for the senior side if he is unleashed. Playing the teenager would be the kind of move that’d get Wednesday fans very excited indeed.

Renegotiating Danny Rohl’s release clause can kill two birds with one stone

And now we address the elephant in the room. Danny Rohl clearly doesn’t want to be at Sheffield Wednesday anymore, but there’s one thing standing in his way.

It is thought Rohl comes with a £5m release clause that is putting all of his suitors off, and Chansiri is seemingly unwilling to budge on that fee. But, doing so would allow a disillusioned manager to move on and bring in crucial funds for the club when they need it most.

It seems impossible for Rohl and Wednesday to work together now, so the club needs to move on and try and find a new manager who is willing to dive into this situation and carry the Owls forward for better or worse.
