Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen could be forced into handing one youngster who shone in the EFL Cup against Bolton Wanderers his first Championship appearance.

Sheffield Wednesday have notched their first win of the 2025/26 season after a battling performance in the EFL Cup away at Bolton Wanderers.

The Owls travelled to the ToughSheet Stadium with a young squad, and they fully repaid Henrik Pedersen’s trust after a brilliant showing to get Sheffield Wednesday the eventual win on penalties.

Whilst there was a catalogue of top performers on display for Pedersen’s side, the one who took centre stage was Gui Siqueira after an incredible goal to open the scoring, the first for him in professional football.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Pedersen may be keen to give the youngster his well-deserved break in the Championship, and there is every chance that he may be forced into giving the youngster a start this weekend against Stoke City.

Henrik Pedersen should utilise Gui Siqueira following Sheffield Wednesday heroics vs Bolton Wanderers

Sheffield Wednesday youngster Gui Siqueira burst onto the scene in brilliant fashion after a 25-yard strike into the top left corner that gave the Owls the lead against Bolton Wanderers.

The marauding defender played an integral role for the Owls, having quashed the threat of Carlos Mendes Gomes, whilst also giving Henrik Pedersen’s side an extra body when on the front foot.

Because of the deteriorating situation at Sheffield Wednesday regarding their squad, with several players moving on in the summer, made worse by the injuries sustained by key players, it could be the case that Pedersen’s hand is forced into giving Siqueira his highly anticipated league debut.

Potential Gui Siqueira league debut will depend on Yan Valery’s uncertain fitness

Henrik Pedersen’s decision to potentially utilise Gui Siqueira from the start against Stoke City at the weekend will depend on whether Yan Valery can get back up to speed after his injury scare against Leicester City.

The Sheffield Wednesday defender was forced off with injury against the Foxes, and Pedersen has been left ‘unsure’ on whether he will be fit and ready this weekend, as he said via The Star.

Fortunately, they have a new star in the shape of Siqueira to stand in for the Tunisian international when needed after what was a ‘stunner’ of a game, as described by The Star, for the Owls on Wednesday evening.
