Championship clubs are already starting to complete their transfer business ahead of the window opening, gaining a head start on their divisional rivals.

On Wednesday, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Norwich City have signed Manchester City’s Jacob Wright after triggering his £2.3 million release clause.

Meanwhile, Hull City are also in ‘advanced’ talks to sign Reda Laalaoui from FUS Rabat, as the Tigers look to improve on their 21st place finish in the Championship.

Norwich and Hull aren’t alone in their ambitions to get their dealings done early, though, with Watford landing a bargain before the window is even open.

Darren Ferguson’s comments on Hector Kyprianou will excite Watford fans

As revealed by journalist Anthony Joseph on X, Watford have completed the signing of Peterborough United midfielder Hector Kyprianou on a free transfer.

The Hornets initially saw a bid for the 23-year-old rejected on transfer deadline day in February, though he’s now reportedly agreed a long-term contract with the Championship side, and he will move to Vicarage Road on July 1.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony instantly regretted the decision not to sell one of his prized assets when he had the chance, but their loss is Watford’s gain.

Despite their struggles in League One, finishing in a lowly 18th, captain Kyprianou has been a shining light for the Posh having featured 40 times in all competitions.

More importantly, manager Darren Ferguson called him and Archie Collins the two ‘best’ midfielders in the third tier during his assessment of the pair in April 2024.

“He (Kyprianou) is a good player. You aren’t going to get any better in this league, those two in there are the best in the league,” Ferguson said.

“I don’t care what team of the year is, there are no two better players in midfield in this league. People will say I’m biased but I’ve seen every midfielder in this league and no one can get near them.”

What Watford fans can expect from Kyprianou

It’s been a busy week for Watford, who sacked Tom Cleverley last Tuesday after he failed to finish in the Championship play-offs.

Supporters were left fuming by that decision, and Watford have since hired Paulo Pezzolano as their new manager.

Pezzolano perhaps didn’t have a say in whether he wanted Kyprianou to join the club, but he will be pleased the Cypriot international is through the door.

Hector Kyprianou’s Peterborough United statistics 2024/25
34 appearances
3 goals
81% accurate passes
1.8 tackles per game
3.3 balls recovered per game
4.9 (53%) duels won per game

As highlighted by his statistics in 2024/25, Kyprianou is primarily a defensive midfielder, possessing a blend of strength and technical ability, making him a well-rounded player for the engine room.

The above will fill Watford supporters with confidence that landing the Peterborough gem on a free transfer is a bargain.
