Wrexham confirmed their place in the second tier for the first time since 1982 on Saturday afternoon with an incredible 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic.
The Red Dragons made history by becoming the first team in England’s top five divisions to win three successive promotions, as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney enjoyed their greatest day as the owners of the Welsh club.
The soon-to-be Championship team will now be turning their attention to the 2025/26 campaign, and while it may take some time for Wrexham’s supporters to slow their celebrations, transfer plans have to be drawn up quickly for the summer.
Ambition is one of the strongest traits in Phil Parkinson’s side, and while they look to have been snubbed by Jamie Vardy, another player associated with Sheffield Wednesday could be the perfect signing to help bridge the gap from League One to the second tier.
Wrexham have to try and sign Josh Windass in the summer
Josh Windass’ contract with the Owls is set to come to an end in the summer after spending five years at Hillsborough, helping the club to promotion to the Championship in 2023 with a last minute winner in extra-time against Barnsley in the play-off final.

This season has been a strong one from his own point of view, and if he is able to add to the 12 goals that he has already scored in 2024/25 on Saturday against Watford, he will become the club’s top scorer in the 21st century.
However, Sheffield Wednesday’s ownership situation is very complex, and there is a great level of uncertainty surrounding the South Yorkshire outfit as the EFL heads into its final weekend.
Windass’ father, Dean, seemed to all but confirm his son’s departure on X last week. He said: “I’ll be going on Saturday to watch our Josh, final game at Hillsborough for Josh. [He’s] had a great career at Sheffield Wednesday, scored a lot of goals.
“Obviously, the most important one at Wembley [in the League One play-off final against Barnsley]. We’ll see what the next chapter in his life is.”
If the versatile attacker is not going to renew at with the Owls, then Wrexham must pounce with Championship experience needed in their team if they are to be able to compete in the division next season.
Windass is perhaps the perfect player to play in the attacking midfield role behind Sam Smith, and Parkinson must surely take an interest in him.
Wrexham will be set for a busy summer transfer window
After finishing second behind the high-spending Birmingham City in League One, Wrexham know that they will have to improve across nearly all areas of the pitch if they are to avoid relegation from the Championship.
They have gone into each of the last four seasons in the spotlight, and next year will be no different for them, but they have a manager who has proven himself on multiple occasions now and he can build a squad capable of competing in any league.
Bringing in players who have storied careers in the Championship will be crucial to the Red Dragons having any sort of success come August, and signing Windass would be an excellent start with Vardy looking to push for a Premier League move.
Younger quality is also needed to help take the Red Dragons to the next level, per an EFL Analysis exclusive, Wrexham are also looking to sign Charlie Savage in what will undoubtedly be a busy summer at the Racecourse Ground.
