Wrexham should pursue another Premier League striker after Jamie Vardy blow, he’s about to be a free agent

Wrexham have a huge summer ahead of them following their promotion from League One to the Championship, and Phil Parkinson needs to get his squad prepared for the second tier.

The Red Dragons have won three successive promotions, taking them from the National League to the EFL’s top division in just three years and excitement will be building in the next few weeks as clubs start to get ready for the new campaign.

However, there is one issue that must be fixed at the Racecourse Ground once the transfer window opens, with Championship experienced needed across the pitch to help the Welsh outfit have a fighting chance of finishing outside of the relegation zone.

Tom Cairney is already being targeted by Wrexham, with the Fulham midfielder out of contract at the end of the season, but it is another player from a London-based Premier League side that Parkinson should show an interest in sooner rather than later.

Danny Ings must be made a priority signing by Wrexham in the summer

A new striker should be seen as a priority for the Red Dragons in the summer, with a number of their current forwards ageing and not up to the level. West Ham United may have the answer for them, with Danny Ings set to leave the club at the end of his contract.

The former Southampton ace has been a bit-part player for the Hammers this season, making just 15 appearances in the Premier League but his experience would be invaluable to a club coming up from League One.

Wrexham are extremely ambitious, and while it looks unlikely that they will sign Jamie Vardy, they must not rest on their laurels and quickly move on to the next target.

Ings does turn 33 in July, but he has proven his quality further up the pyramid over the course of the last decade and pursuing a move for him would be a true indication of where the Red Dragons see themselves heading in the next 12 months.

Parkinson will want to ensure that his team are not threatened by relegation, and replacing strikers who have struggled in League One with one who will score goals in the Championship is a must.

Danny Ings will be highly sought after this summer

Although he has scored only once this season, Ings will have plenty of suitors in the second tier in the coming weeks and months – mainly due to his experience.

If he can stay fit, then the three-times capped England international will score goals at that level and for a team like Wrexham, whose main focus originally will be on a mid-table finish, he could prove crucial in big moments.

With Steven Fletcher departing and Paul Mullin being targeted by Wigan Athletic, having that older-head up front will be needed and Parkinson must move quickly to ensure that his team are the ones to secure his services and beat out their rivals to a striker that could be the difference between survival and relegation.
