Wigan Athletic could snap up prolific EFL striker this summer, Wrexham have a big decision to make

Wigan Athletic are one of several former Premier League sides who have found themselves struggling in the third tier of English football.

In the 2024/25 campaign, Wigan finished in 15th position after a mostly difficult campaign that was somewhat salvaged by new manager Ryan Lowe.

The former Preston North End boss went unbeaten in his final eight matches, posting victories over Shrewsbury Town and Rotherham United during that run, while the rest were draws.

Wigan’s biggest problem throughout the season was putting the ball in the back of the net, ending as League One’s lowest scorers with 40.

Worryingly, 19 of their goals were scored by Thelo Aasgaard – who joined Luton Town in January – and centre-forward Dale Taylor.

The Latics, therefore, need to add some firepower to their forward line this summer, with reports linking them to a prolific EFL striker.

Wigan Athletic want to sign Wrexham striker Paul Mullin

According to Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, Wigan are trying to do an ambitious deal to sign Wrexham’s out-of-favour centre-forward Paul Mullin.

The report claims that the Red Dragons, who won promotion to the Championship in 2025, could let their legendary striker leave for nothing despite his contract running until 2027.

That is because Mullin’s wages at Wrexham are so high, and the only way Wigan could potentially fork out for the 30-year-old is if there’s no transfer fee involved.

Mullin played a huge role in the Welsh club’s rise into the third tier, scoring a total of 62 goals in back-to-back National League and League Two campaigns.

Unfortunately, he was unable to carry that momentum into League One, where he’s struggled to nail down a place in the starting line-up, with Phil Parkinson leaving him out of the squad in their final 14 matches.

The former Cambridge United hitman only started nine games last term, featuring 26 times in total and returning just three goals, raising doubts over his capabilities in the third tier.

Should Wigan swoop for Mullin?

Mullin has inarguably been Wrexham’s most important player since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds completed their takeover in 2021.

The Liverpool-born finisher has plundered an eye-watering 105 goals in 165 games for the club, which has been responsible for fast-tracking them up the divisions.

Adored by Wrexham fans all around the globe, supporters will be distraught to see him leave the Racecourse Ground this summer, and perhaps he’s worth a gamble for Wigan.

Although his record at League One level is grim, with just six goals in 46 appearances, a fresh environment for Mullin and working under someone like Lowe could give him a new lease of life.

Ultimately, Mullin relishes being the main focal point of a team’s forward line, and since that isn’t possible at Wrexham any more, he will be eyeing redemption elsewhere.
