Leeds United icon aimed sly dig at Bristol City after transforming his career with Elland Road move

Leeds United are preparing to host Bristol City this weekend in one of their final Championship fixtures, aiming to cap their stellar season with the league title.

The last time the two sides met, Bristol City managed to hold Leeds to a frustrating 0-0 draw.

However, the upcoming encounter holds less pressure for the already-promoted Yorkshire side.

Rewind to Leeds‘ previous promotion-winning season, and one figure stands out who once donned the red of Bristol City: Luke Ayling.

Arriving at Elland Road from Ashton Gate in 2016, Ayling quickly established himself as arguably the Championship’s finest right-back.

Despite his later success, his arrival was marked by what could be perceived as a subtle jab at his former employers.

Luke Ayling says ‘things weren’t right for him’ at Bristol City

In an interview on Leeds’ Instagram page, when reflecting on his move to Elland Road, the then-28-year-old offered an insight into his situation at Bristol City.

“I grew up when they (Leeds United) were in the Premiership and playing Champions League football,” he said.

“I never thought I would get an opportunity to play for Leeds.

“Things weren’t right for me at Bristol City, I was probably second or third choice.

“I knew I could play there but other people thought I couldn’t and thought I wasn’t good enough to play right-back in the Championship.”

The opportunity at Leeds was a welcome one. “When Leeds came in and said they were interested I was over the moon.

“I called Kyle Bartley who was here at the time. I was buzzing, I was out with the missus shopping and got a call from my agent to say come down to Heathrow to sign the papers and go up there tomorrow.

“I stopped shopping, went to sign the papers and then it all happened in very quick time.”

Leeds United bought Luke Ayling from Bristol City for a fee of £200,000. He arrived at Elland Road on 11th August 2016.

Luke Ayling’s stats during his time at Leeds United

During his seven and a half seasons at Leeds United, the tenacious and popular defender, affectionately known as ‘Bill’ – a nickname tracing back to his Arsenal youth days – amassed an impressive 268 appearances.

Ayling has even been flagged as the ‘missing’ link this season for Leeds United due to his status as a fan favourite and consistent performances.

A significant highlight was the 2019/20 Championship-winning campaign under Marcelo Bielsa, where Ayling was instrumental, a constant threat on the right flank.

He often wore the captain’s armband, underscoring his leadership.

Memorable moments include his stunning last-minute winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 2022, further solidifying his cult hero status.

While his game time lessened in 2023/24, his legacy at Elland Road is secure. His unwavering dedication and connection with the fans have made him a modern-day legend.

Even after his loan and subsequent permanent move, Ayling is one of five players Middlesbrough must sell if they want to win promotion.

One place he would surely be welcomed back to is Elland Road if he so wished, with his contributions remaining a cherished chapter in Leeds United’s history, marked by promotion, Premier League survival, and the rise of a true club icon.
